Hayley

The next semester had started sooner than Hayley would have liked. Since her meeting with Dr. Roberts, she had been having the same nightmares, night after night, luckily though, nothing had changed, there had been no more additions to the dream. Nate picked Hayley up for school on the first day back. She wasn’t even sure if they were really “official” but in the mean time she was happy to oblige. Nate was sweet, he didn’t want to rush into a relationship and he respected her wishes.

But there was something about him, she couldn’t tell what it was but he seemed to unravel a new and seriously attractive quality each time she saw him. Nate pulled his bike up on the school grounds in the parking lot and helped Hayley with her bags, holding her hand tightly, grinning from ear to ear. Hayley glanced around, everyone was staring. I guess that’s what you get for having one guy before you leave and another when you return. Hayley thought to herself, Nate squeezed her hand, comforting her a little.

He brushed his thumb over her skin, just like Lewis used to. She felt herself become tense and rigid. Nate looked down at her with his beautiful eyes and kissed her forehead softly.

“It’s alright, Babe.” He whispered into her hair and kissed the top of her head. Hayley felt the corners of her lips twitch upward into a smile. Just then she glanced across the quad and spotted Lewis, with Karla. Laughing, they walked together down the corridor, away from the crowds of students, his arm wrapped casually around her shoulder. Hayley could literally feel the rage building up in her body.

You don’t care remember? She tried to convince herself that she really didn’t have any feeling left for him but she just couldn’t. She couldn’t lie to herself because deep down she knew she really did care.

First period could not have gone any worse than it did, History with him. Mr Austin did it on purpose, he totally did it on purpose!  Hayley was outraged, she wanted to protest, scream out at him. How could he? A project with him! IS HE CRAZY? Lewis looked just as objective, he couldn’t even look Hayley in the eye; he just kept looking straight through her, as if she didn’t exist. Hayley sighed loudly and rolled her eyes.

“Pathetic.” She whispered under her breath. Lewis lifted his eyes from his hands in his lap and stared daggers at Hayley. She returned his glare and he seemed to retreat.

“Your project is due on Thursday morning.” Mr Austin continued. Hayley’s eyes nearly bulged out of their sockets. Great, this means I have to actually talk to him. She sighed and picked up her books, tossing them into her bag as the bell rang as he took hold of her arm. His hand was cold and felt foreign to her.

“Look, I know you hate this just as much as I do, so let’s just clear the air, one, Karla and I are sort of dating and two, let’s get this project over and done with so we can get on with our lives.” Hayley ripped her arm out of his hand and hissed back at him,

“One, I don’t need to know whether you and Karla are dating or not and two, I couldn’t be happier to get this over with. Be at my house after school today, we can get started, the sooner the better.”

“Fine.” He said through gritted teeth. Hayley rolled her eyes and sauntered off. She felt her heart sink, he really doesn’t care anymore, and he’s moved on.
