Karla

Karla got one very unexpected call. As soon as she hung up with the doctor over the phone she raced over to his house, she knew he would need someone to be with. His mother was his only family left, living in this country that is. After ringing the doorbell a few times she gave up and assumed he would be with Nate. She quickly dialled Nate’s number and asked where Lewis was.

“Last I heard, he was over at Hayley’s for the History project, why?” Nate asked.

“I need to find him right now, his mother just passed away and I’m sure he would need someone’s shoulder to cry on.” Karla held back her own tears; she needed to be strong for Lewis. All she could think about was how she had found out about her father. She was suicidal, she felt as if her life was over. She felt that she couldn’t possibly live without him. She prayed to God that Lewis wouldn’t do anything irrational. Pull yourself together. Nate took a long while to reply until finally he let out a long, shaky breath.

“Man, I didn’t even know she was in hospital. Try Hayley’s house, I’ll call Hayley and let her know what’s going on, she deserves to know.” Nate hung up after that.

Karla got back into her car and sped down the road until she spotted Lewis on the bridge. Her heart jumped into her throat. Please don’t jump Lewis, hold on. She had never seen anyone go quite so pale and look so ghoulish like Lewis did. She parked the car and ran over to him. She watched as he cried into his sleeves. Hesitantly she put out her hand and placed it gently on his shoulder. He sniffed loudly, probably from shock. He lifted his head from his arms, his eyes were grey and red rimmed from crying. Karla smiled half-heartedly at him. He threw his arms around her and held onto her as if his life depended on it. His face was buried into her neck and she could feel his tears wetting her shirt but she didn’t mind. She was so glad she had found him. Instinctively she rubbed his back in small circles.

“Shhh, don’t you worry... She is in a better place now. The Big Guy up there knows what to do with an Angel like her.” Karla felt her tears hit her cheeks and she kissed Lewis on his head softly.
