Hayley
Her phone rang loudly next to her ear as she lay in bed reading. She answered on the fourth ring.
“Lewis?” She asked, expecting it to be him.
“Oh, Hi Hayley, It’s Nathan, um Nate.”
“Oh, Hey Nate, thought you were Lou...How’s it going?”
“Sorry to disappoint. I’m well thanks, and yourself?”
“You’re never disappointing Nate and to be completely honest, I am so bored!”
“Are you busy at the moment?”
“No, I’m reading. Why?”
“That’s perfect; I was wondering if you would like to go out for lunch with me? We need to talk about something.”
“Sounds serious, is everything alright?”
“Mmmhm, just fine. Please meet me at the coffee shop in 20 minutes.”
“Oh, um, okay. See you there.”
“Bye.” Hayley got up off her bed and got changed.
“Mom, please can you take me to the coffee shop?” She yelled from her room and waited for a reply,
“Sure thing, Honey. Meeting friends?”
“Mmmhm...”
“Alright, let me get my keys...Oh, well don’t you look adorable?”
“Moooom.” Hayley whined.
“It was only a compliment.” Her mother laughed.
***
“What?!” Hayley almost screamed.
“I, I’m sorry, it was only what I heard, I really hope it’s not true Hayz.”
“Okay, let me get this straight...Karla went to his house to visit his mother? And he kissed her?”
“That’s what she told me, she sounded very frantic on the phone and kept saying that she never wanted to get between you two and she didn’t know how to tell you. In case you thought it was her fault.”
“That sounds like a likely story.” Hayley said sarcastically.
“I know, I couldn’t believe Lewis would do something to that extent either, who would cheat on such a perfect girl.” said Nate slowly, emphasizing the word “perfect”. Hayley burst into tears and Nate wrapped her in a tight embrace, it felt good to be in someone’s arms or she was afraid she would fall to pieces. She breathed heavily into Nate’s chest, he stroked her hair lightly.
“I am truly sorry Hayley. I just want you to know that I will always be here for you, no matter what.”
Nate’s words were both comforting and soothing. He kissed the top of her head. Nate is such an amazing guy, he is such a great friend. Without thinking Hayley reached up and kissed Nate. It was too late to back out now. Maybe it was the mixed emotions running through her but she couldn’t place what possessed her to kiss him. Nate didn’t react or try to go further, he just held Hayley tighter. Oh God, what have I done? Hayley thought.
Later that afternoon Hayley decided to call Lewis, she wanted to know the truth. She could feel a hole burning in her heart. Yes, she felt extremely guilty for kissing Nate but her kiss was accidental, at least she could explain her reason. Could Lewis? Could he explain how, him making a move on her was a mistake? She heard the receiver click on the other end.
