Lewis
Lewis shivered and pulled the, now sopping wet, towel around his shoulders. Hayley had walked out of the living room, her voice faded into the background. Lewis couldn’t help but ponder the thought of what if...
What if they hadn’t found him?
What if Hayley hadn’t got that call?
What if he had died in the river and his body was only found weeks later... Lewis shuddered, he felt his skin crawl.
“-other towel?” Nate’s voice snapped Lewis out of his thoughts. Lewis blinked at Nate and tried to make sense of his words.
“Do you need another towel?” Nate smiled warmly, acknowledging the fact that Lewis had missed what he had just said. Lewis chuckled and nodded,
“Sorry,” he mumbled as Nate got up and walked out of the room, leaving Lewis by himself.
Lewis pulled himself off of the couch and walked over to the mirror on the wall. He studied his reflection. He looked shockingly sick and horribly untidy. Lewis ran his hand though his matted and slightly damp hair. It fell limply over his eyes. Lewis sighed, accepting his new hairstyle and leaned on the small table right underneath it; all the muscles in his arms were tired and strained. Lewis hung his head and massaged the nape of his neck with his hand. He noticed a few photo frames sitting on the edge of the table just under the mirror. Lewis picked up the one near the middle of them and smiled softly. It was of himself and Nate, arms draped over each other’s shoulders, smiling their brightest smiles. It was what they knew best back then.
“That was taken on my ninth birthday, do you remember?” Nate’s voice came from over his shoulder. Lewis nearly dropped the photo frame in fright. Lewis nodded his head and laughed softly.
“Good times.” He replied and replaced the frame in its place. Nate shoved the dry towel in Lewis’ hands and smiled, a soft dimple forming in the crease of his smile. Lewis grabbed the towel and wrapped it around his shoulders, using the corner to ruffle his hair with. Nate returned to his position on the couch and Lewis slumped down next to him. Lewis sighed loudly, trying to fill the awkward silence. Nate cleared his throat. Hayley walked past the doorway, phone in hand still talking to Dr. Roberts.
“Nate look, I need to tell you something.” Lewis said, grimacing. He knew this was pushing it, especially on the day where everything went wrong but he needed to get it off his chest, to clear the air or it would nag at him all the time. Nate raised his eyebrows and frowned slowly.
“Today, after school...I went over to Hayley’s house for the, uh... History project and I uh, I wanted to get it over with, because you know, it’s been pretty awkward between us since the break up and um...” Nate’s eyes widened slightly, egging him on. “I kind of, well... I kissed Hayley. It was a huge mistake, I’m really sorry Nate, I really am.”
Nate smiled weakly and shook his head. He scratched the back of his head and then looked at Lewis, his eyes looked shallow, almost empty but he had a smile tugging at his lips. “It’s okay,”
Lewis interrupted, “I know you probably hate me after all that’s happened and we cleared everything up and...”
“Its okay Lou. Honestly.” Nate smiled warmly. Lewis stopped rambling and ended up gawking at Nate, he couldn’t believe he had just said it was okay.
“It, it’s okay?” Lewis said slowly. Nate nodded at him and let out a laugh through his nose.
“That’s really strange, you know it’s actually almost like my dream that I’ve been having, except the roles are reversed.”
