Karla

Thursday night. Karla lay in bed with her laptop on her stomach; it lifted and dropped slowly as she breathed. She typed in a status on Facebook and then shut it down. Her eyelids felt heavy. She pushed the laptop to the end of her double bed and pulled the covers over her face. She sighed loudly. The TV in the next room was the only sound she could hear. Just then her phone rang loudly next to her ear. Karla threw off the covers and grabbed her phone.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Karla.” Karla sat up, completely shocked.

“Lewis?”

“I’m sorry to bother you so late, I just didn’t know who else to call.” Karla was so confused.

“Lewis, where are you?”

“At the hospital...” Her heart thumped in her chest.

“Jesus, are you alright? Are you hurt?” He took a while to reply.

“I’m fine, it’s my mom.” She’s sick remember.

“Lewis, stay right there okay? I’ll be there in, ah, give me ten minutes okay?” She glanced at the watch on her wrist.

“Sure thing.”

Sure Nate was a great guy. But Karla never felt quite content with him; she needed to be with Lewis. He was gorgeous. Being good at manipulating people Karla tried her best to get through to Lewis with subtle hints of affection but he never caught on. He was always too occupied with Hayley, her mortal enemy. She had hated Hayley ever since she started dating Nate and Jayson broke up with the little pathetic shrew. Lewis was always with her. Always. Karla never seemed to get her way with him. Eventually she ended it with Nate and Hayley decided to move in on Lewis, Lewis of all people! Sabotage was the only way she would get what she wanted: Lewis. She had planned it all, kiss Lewis, blame him, tell Nate, Nate would go running to Hayley and she would have Lewis, finally. It worked. He finally called her. This was a sign. He wanted her.

“I really appreciate you coming Karla, I didn’t know what to do, let alone who else to call...” his voice wandered off. She felt herself smile.

“Lou, ah, Lewis,” she put her hands over his and took them into hers, her hands were warm, much warmer than his,

“I’m so sorry about your mum, and, about the whole episode on Saturday, I really shouldn’t have kissed you, I didn’t mean to ruin your relationship, really I am truly sorry.” Totally not true. Be sincere; come on, he’s hurting. Win him over.

“You know what? It’s alright Karla... I found out that, Na-, Nate kissed Hayley.” He squeezed Karla’s hands a little too tight for her to handle.

“Ow, Lewis you’re hurting me.” She exclaimed. He looked into her eyes and released his grip. She felt as if she was going to melt. Karla breathed a sigh of relief.

“Sorry, I guess I’m still a little upset.” He admitted. A little, try a little too much.

“How did you find out?” Nate told Hayley and then made a move on her? This is perfect. This was working out better than she had originally planned.

“Hayley got really pissed with me about our, um, our kiss and she, she just came out with it.” Two-timing rat. Karla thought.

“Oh, I’m sorry.” She did her best to bat her dark eyelashes at him and pouted her lips.

“We’re taking a break from each other, hoping things might improve.” Not if I can do anything about this. She said to herself.

“So, you’re kindasingle?”She felt as if she was going to burst.
