Nick's Notes

The next day

Nick unlocked the front door. 'After you.'

I walked in and went straight upstairs to dump my bag.
While I was there, I changed into some casual shorts, a tank top and my black jumper with a red sparkly heart on the front.

I then walked back downstairs and went to the living room. Nick was sat in front of the TV. He looked up when I entered. 'Do you want me to start dinner?'

'If you want.'

'Okay.' He nodded, getting up. 'Is pasta okay?'

'Yep.' I nodded.

'Help yourself to the TV remote.' He said as he walked into the kitchen.

I took his advice and picked up the remote. I loved it when Nick was all sweet like this.

I flicked through the channels to find something to watch.

Ooh, my favourite documentary; Paranormal State.

Before I reached that channel however, the batteries in the remote decided to run out.
I pressed a few buttons to check that they were really dead.

Yep. Nothing happened.

I sighed in annoyance and got off the sofa to get some batteries from the basement.

I opened the door and walked down the steps to the basement.

Where were these batteries?

Oh yeah. Second drawer to the left.
I opened the drawer and spotted the batteries. I took 2 batteries out the pack and closed the drawer.
As I was about to turn to leave, a small folded up piece of paper caught my eye. On the front was written in Nick's scrawl:
How To Be The Perfect Husband To My Beautiful Wife.

Out of curiosity, I opened up the paper, and two lists were written. They were:

What annoys Katherine:
1. She doesn't like if you drive her to work
2. If she catches you staring, asks, and you say "nothing".
3. When you call her Mrs Clarke
4. When you make decisions for her
5. When you remind her that you're CEO.

What Katherine likes:
1. When you call her Kath
2. Cuddling up at night
3. When you treat her like a princess after work
4. Small gestures like hugs, smiles and winks, general teasing
5. When you compliment her on her outfits

I stared at the writing for a very long time.

Emily was right. Nick obviously did care about me and love me, if he'd put all this effort into keeping me happy and trying not to antagonise me.

And I loved him a lot. I didn't realise how much of a hard time I'd been giving him.

I resolved to try harder in this marriage now. Nick was obviously trying hard, so this was the least I could do.

I replaced his notes on the desk and went back upstairs with the batteries.
I went into the living room and replaced the batteries in the remote as Nick walked in.
'Ah, there you are.' He said. 'Where did you go?'

'I just went to get some batteries for the remote.' I smiled.

'I was just wondering if you were okay with peppers in the pasta?' Nick asked.

'Yeah, that's fine.'

'Great.'

'Oh, Nick?'

'Yeah?' He turned back around.

'Do you mind driving me to work tomorrow?' I asked.

He paused and then smiled. 'Of course not. I'll love to take you to work tomorrow.'

'Great.'
