Katherine's POV
I stared at her in disbelief. 'You?'
'Yes, me.' She smiled smugly. 'Who else?'
'All this time... it was you??!' I uttered. 'You sent the notes, the messages.'
She nodded. 'Stupid woman. Who else did you think it was? Mary?'
I glared at her, even though my heart was racing. 'Did Nick really have a board meeting? Or was that a trick of yours? Oh god, if you've hurt him-'
She barked out a laugh, motioning with her gun. 'Me?? Hurt my Nick?!? Are you stupid? I would never hurt Nick. It was a trick, to get you here!'
I remembered the pocket knife I had in my back pocket. I'd bought it when I received the first death threat. If only I could get it without her noticing...
Keep her talking, Katherine.
'But you!' She glared at me with hatred. 'You are the one who hurt him! You ruined him! Took him away from me!' She started scratching her arms, causing them to freshly bleed. She hardly noticed.
'I'm sorry Rebecca.'
'Don't tell me you're sorry, stupid little tart.' She hissed.
'What about the notes, the messages?' I said, to keep her talking. 'Why did you send them?'
'Very clever plan of mine, I must admit.' She laughed. 'I sent them to scare you. Do you think if I didn't send you a load of messages and just sent you a note with instructions, or I'll hurt Nick, do you think for a second you would have come? No. You would have just gone to the police. So I had to make you believe I'd hurt Nick by sending you a load of death threats.'
I slowly pulled the pocket knife out of my back pocket and flipped the blade out. 'That's sick Rebecca, I was terrified!'
'Do I look like I care?' She grinned. 'Shame I couldn't have caused you to have a nervous breakdown or something. Would have made my job a whole lot easier.'
'I nearly did, thanks to you.' I snarled.
'Either way, you're going to die here.' She shrugged carelessly, turning away slightly.
This was my chance. I suddenly ran over and went at her with the small knife, but she was too quick for me. She turned and swung the gun into the side of my face. White hot pain shot through me as the gun made contact, and I fell to the floor.
Before I could recover and get up however, Rebecca grabbed my arms in a deadlock and put a cloth over my mouth, which smelled like chemicals. I struggled against her, but it was pointless as a few moments later, everything went black.
Nick's POV
'So, these are the notes?' Hollins said.
'Yep.' I nodded.
'Okay, I'll send these to the lab to be checked out, and I'll need Katherine's phone number, so I can access the messages she recieved.' He added.
'It's alright, she left her phone here.' I passed it to him.
'Great, I can trace the IP address on the messages and find out which phone it was sent from. I'll the report sent to you as soon as possible.' He said. 'Don't worry Nick. Stay strong. You don't want Katherine coming back to see you in a state like this.'
'Right.' I replied. 'Thanks.'
'No problem.' He headed out and as soon as he left, Will came into the room. He saw me sitting on the bed, looking dejected and defeated, and sympathy crossed his face.
'It'll be okay dad. Katherine will be okay. She's got to be.' He sat next to me on the bed.
I looked at him in surprise. 'You're worried about her, aren't you?'
'Well of course I am, she's my step-mum.' He frowned slightly. 'She's family, of course I'm gonna be worried.'
'I never knew you felt that way. I just thought you... tolerated her.' I admitted.
'No. I mean, she could be a pain in the neck sometimes, but she's not that bad. She's changed a lot.' He told me. 'She's a really good step-mum too.'
'Yeah, I didn't think she'd handle the whole "family" setting and whatever, but she's settled into the family well.' I agreed.
'She'll be okay, dad. She's strong. The Calimov explosion should have knocked her confidence, but it didn't. She came out of it like a right hero.' He grinned. 'But then again, that might have just been the nanobots.'
I chuckled quietly. 'Yeah, she's a fighter. Whoever's taken her... it won't matter. Whoever it is, she won't go down without a fight.'
4 Hours Later
I was staring at the TV, but I just couldn't watch it properly. My mind was on Katherine. I was worried sick about her. I'd acted normal in front of Eve, Will, KT and Lily, but inside, the anxiety was still there.
My phone suddenly rang, making me jump. I looked at the caller ID; Hollins.
'Hollins?' I pressed answer and put the phone to my ear frantically. 'What have you got?'
'Nick..' Hollins voice sounded weary and I tensed up.
'What is it?'
'Nick, we know who took Katherine.' He said quietly as I slammed my fist on the coffee table.
'Who, Goddammit?'
'Nick, Katherine is going to suffer in ways unimaginable if you don't get to her first!' He snapped as I became angrier.
'Who the fuck is it?'
'Check the file sent to you.' He said, ending the call and I practically ran to the front door. I opened it and picked up the brown envelope.
I tore it open and scanned the file, before I made sense of the text, with the familiar name.
Oh no....
I was going to find Katherine one way or another.
And I was going to find Katherine before she did.
