I couldn't concentrate at all. I was jumping at every little sound and Nick was at the meeting.
I turned back to my laptop, trying to control my breathing.
Concentrate, Katherine.
It was no good. I just couldn't. No matter how hard I tried.
In the end, I closed my laptop and decided to carry on with the model circuit board dispenser I was trying to get working.
I opened the right drawer and saw a piece of paper, folded up on top of it.
I forced myself to stay calm as I knew what this was. I picked up the paper and unfolded it:
DON'T SHOW THIS TO ANYONE OR TELL ANYONE. ESPECIALLY NOT NICK. TELL NICK AND HE GET'S HURT.
YOU ARE TO GO TO THE HOUSE WHICH IS CURRENTLY ABANDONED ON ASHBOURNE ROAD BEFORE 11PM. FAIL TO DO SO AND NICK WILL GET HURT. REMEMBER, DON'T TELL ANYBODY. OR NICK WILL GET HURT. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
I stared at the note in disbelief. Who the fuck did they think they were, threatening Nick?
Looks like I was left with no choice. I had to go. I couldn't stay here, and have my family in danger. I was endangering their lives by staying here.
Nick's POV
'So, if that's all...' Michael said. 'Unless you'd like to add anything, Nick?'
'Not really, no.' I shrugged. I just wanted to get out of this boring meeting. It was taking forever.
'Actually, there is something I'd like to add.' Mr Jefferson said. I internally sighed. What now?
He looked at me. 'I have some concerns about your... relationship with Dr Calvin. And I'm sure the board will agree with me on this point too.'
'It's a marriage for a start. And she's not a Calvin anymore.' I pointed out. 'What of it?'
'Okay... We're a little concerned that your marriage to Dr... Clarke could be impacting on this business.' Mr Jefferson continued.
I started to get all defensive. How dare he comment on my marriage? 'Hardly.' I scoffed. 'How do you mean, it's impacting on the business? We keep our working lives and our personal lives separate, thank you very much.'
'I'm inclined to believe that Mr Clarke. But we're just worried that there might be an element of... favouritism going on...'
'And what makes you think that?' I demanded.
'We've had several complaints of you treating... Katherine differently in the workplace.' He said. 'That you've been bringing your personal life into work.'
'Look, I promise you nothing of the sort is going on.' I sighed impatiently. 'I don't know who's been telling you this, but I'll tell you this. A lot of employees here don't like Katherine-'
'With good reason.' Mr Phillips muttered. I ignored him.
'As, I was saying, a lot of employees here don't like Katherine, and would love to see her gone. The only person she's got right now is me. I'm not singling her out or anything. Her colleagues would love to use our marriage against her.' I explained.
'I believe you.' Mr Jefferson said. 'But, be warned, if we get another complaint, action will have to be taken.'
'Okay.' I sighed. 'Is that all?'
Everyone agreed, so I began collecting up my papers while everyone filed out of the meeting room.
Only me and Michael was left.
'That was totally unfair of them Nick.' Michael said. 'I've seen how you and Katherine are, and I can tell you're telling the truth. I just want you to know, that I'm behind you and Katherine all the way. If the board try to intervene, I've got your back.'
'Erm.. thanks Michael.' I nodded. That was unexpected.
Me and Michael walked out of the building together, talking about the weather, then I got into my car and drove to Calimov.
When I got there, I got a coffee from the break room and headed up to the lab.
When I got there, Katherine was sat at her desk, doing nothing at all. Her laptop was closed and she was just sat there.
'Slacking off are we?' I joked, walking over.
Then I really saw her.
Katherine had gone as white as a sheet, and she was trembling slightly.
'Kath?' I rushed over, placing my coffee on the desk. 'Babe, what's wrong? Please, talk to me.'
'Nick..' She whispered.
'What's wrong?' I put my hand to her forehead. 'Are you sick?'
She nodded. 'Yeah, I feel awful.'
'Okay. I'll call Kyle, see if he can take you home, okay?' I said. Kyle was an employee at Calimov and a friend of me and Katherine.'
'RIght.' She agreed.'
