It was very early in the morning at the sprawling Connecticut estate of Elijah and Angelica Mikaelson. The master bedroom suite was dark and the house was quiet as Elijah lay asleep on his back with his wife, Angelica, nestled under his right arm. A faint creak of the floorboard caught Elijah's attention and as he awoke he heard the doorknob being slowly turned. The door opened slightly and the intruder slipped quietly into the bedroom. The glow from the night light eerily illuminated the bedroom walls with dancing shadows. Elijah waited as he listened to footsteps walking lightly across the carpeting towards the bed.

As the intruder neared the bed's edge, it was time to act. Elijah opened his eyes and said in a low voice, "Henrik Finn, we have talked about this son, you are supposed to be in your own bed." The boy stood at the side of the bed for a moment as Elijah turned his head left and looked the 5-year-old sternly in the eyes. Henrik Finn held his gaze then smiled broadly at his father, as he dug the toe of his right foot into the carpeting.

Elijah smiled back at Henrik Finn as he reached out with his left arm. The boy jumped with glee as he grabbed Elijah's hand with both of his tiny hands, and Elijah lifted the boy effortlessly up onto the bed. Henrik Finn sat on his knees as Elijah told him quietly, "Don't wake your mother." Elijah lifted his arm up so that his son could nestle in to him. Henrik Finn mirrored his mother, each resting their heads upon Elijah's broad chest and tucked safely under Elijah's muscular arms. Elijah kissed the top of his son's head as Henrik Finn quickly fell asleep. Elijah kissed the top of Angelica's head as well. She stirred a bit and reached out to Henrik Finn, putting her hand on top of her son's hand, before slipping back into a deep sleep.

As Elijah lay there with his family, he reflected on how different things were seemingly not so long ago, and how truly blessed he was to have them both now. Elijah fell back to sleep with a smile on his face, protectively and tenderly holding the two most important people in the world to him. It would be a busy day and they all needed to get a good night's sleep.
