Niklaus Mikaelson was the King of New Orleans and all trembled in fear before him. He had made many sacrifices to achieve such greatness including daggering his siblings to ensure they stayed out of his way as he wielded power over the werewolves, the witches and the vampires. He put his daughter on a pedestal and anointed her as the Princess of his Kingdom, a powerful Mikaelson witch who would rule this city with her father once she came of age. And nothing, and no one, would stand in the way of that.

Niklaus looked at the coffins containing his daggered siblings, they were all there: Elijah, Rebekah, Kol and Finn. There they would remain in eternal slumber until the King would decide to commute their sentences and release them, provided they bowed to his will. Freya was there, too, trapped by a spell unable to awaken unless Niklaus decreed it to be so.

He had eliminated other enemies in his pursuit of power. Long ago he killed Hayley because she tried to take Hope away from Niklaus. She had fled with her werewolf pack but Niklaus had found them, and one by one he slaughtered the werewolves until only Jackson and Hayley remained. Niklaus the Hybrid took down Jackson the Alpha with ease, dismembering him in front of Hayley. And now it was time for Hayley's punishment and the sentence was death. As Niklaus held Hayley's severed heart in his hand, he commented, "You should not have taken my daughter from me, I warned you, but you just wouldn't listen." He dropped the heart on the ground, picked up his baby girl from her stroller, and returned to his castle in the heart of the City of New Orleans.

Marcel Gerard had tried to reason with King Niklaus but when he heard of the massacre and of Hayley's death, the baby girl that Marcel had saved so many years ago, he attacked Niklaus but Niklaus was stronger, faster and was Marcel's sire. "I gave you eternal life, Marcel, and all I asked in return was your loyalty. But you could not give me that, always conspiring behind my back, with Rebekah, with Hayley, with Elijah. I will suffer your insolence no more." He took Marcel's heart and watched as his body fell to the ground, desiccating before his father's cold, dead eyes.

Niklaus surveilled his empire and marveled at the beauty that was his teenaged daughter, Hope. She was exactly like Niklaus, with a thirst for power and a ruthlessness that matched his own. Dahlia's influence was strong as well and Niklaus' aunt had helped him to raise Hope, an agreement they struck when Hope was a baby. But Niklaus had become paranoid of late that Dahlia was conspiring to take his kingdom from him, and so he took advantage one day and ripped out his aunt's throat so she would die, unable to speak a mystical spell to save her thousand-year-old life.

But Hope loved her Aunt Dahlia and saw her death as a betrayal. She sought revenge against her father by taking his family from him, and one by one they burned: Finn, Elijah, Kol, Rebekah, and Freya. She then turned her vengeance upon her father. Niklaus was unable to control his rage and in the ensuing battle he took his daughter's life. He was out of his mind with grief that he had lost everyone that mattered to him and now he was alone with his Kingdom. All he had left was power and so he decided to set out and level the entire City of New Orleans for the simple crime of being alive.
