Hunter's Story
The day started like any other day. Except this time, something was different. Something was stirring in the background and I knew what it was. School had started again and it was my final year.
I was leaning against my locker, talking to Logan when I saw her. My old best friend. My old crush. She walked into the school hallway alone, a fact that nearly killed me. She always seemed to be alone.
She held a journal in her hands and she made a beeline for the cafeteria. She looked upset, another fact that killed me. I was always looking at her when she wasn't glaring at me and she always seemed so angry and lonely. It was my fault.
I had found myself standing in front of my English teacher that morning, asking him to partner us up.
I wanted to apologise to her. For everything I had done to her three years ago. It seemed harsh now, totally overrated but I knew I hurt her. I ripped both her and my heart out that day. She couldn't even look at me now and when she did, it was partnered with an icy glare.
I walked to the cafeteria with Logan and Blake, my thoughts racing through my head. We sat down at our usual table and I glanced over at Jamie to see that she was sitting alone, scribbling in her journal again.
I looked away and tried to focus on the conversation but then I felt eyes on me. I looked at her again to see her looking at me. Her sad face morphed into a scowl before she tore her eyes away first. She had been crying, she slammed her journal close.
My heart was aching to go over to her and hug her, to tell her I was a jerk and that I loved her.
I also knew Jamie Lance, and she didn't forgive easily. The bell went when I finally stopped looking at her and I got to my feet, sighing. I had English now and I had just asked my teacher if I could partner up with Jamie.
I was doomed now.
I walked to class with Logan, Blake and Jackson behind me, I kept my eyes on the ground but the moment I stepped a foot through the door, my eyes landed on Jamie. Her head bent, deliberately not looking at me or my friends. I bit my lip to stop myself from saying something.
I slid into my seat at the back on the class and waited for the teacher to begin. Our English teacher, Mr Alex began speaking. "Good Afternoon students, I trust you are all ready to learn because, wait for it you're going to love me, there's an English Essay due in 14 days! Yay!" The teacher said cheerfully as the class groaned.
I couldn't help but smile as I looked at Jamie, I saw her perk up. She loved exams and essays. That was always her thing.
"And here's the fun part! You have set partners!" The teacher added, smiling.
The smile dropped from my face as I tried to look like I hadn't made a deal with him. I couldn't look suspicious then Jamie would know what's up.
Most of the class groaned but I didn't. I had hoped Mr Alex kept his side of the deal. He looked at me, briefly, nodding his head.
He started walking around and handing everyone a slip of paper. I reached out to grab mine and unfolded it. Jamie's name stared back."The names on this piece of paper is your partner! No swapping or trading because I have it all written down in my notes!" The teacher exclaimed as he finished handing them out.
