“I’m excited to figure out what we are having,” I conveyed as I slipped on my shorts. We just got out of the shower and were about to leave for an appointment. We get to find out the sex of the babies. I'm super excited. Like I cannot hold the excitement in.
“Me too, baby girl.” Derrick kissed me on the lips, softly. I’m twenty-one weeks along and bigger than ever. Aunt Mari and Erin have been staying with us since Aunt Mari is my wedding planner. Erin is three months pregnant and you can’t even tell. Her boyfriend and her talk every day. They are talking about him maybe flying down here to meet the family. After the wedding, they will be flying back to California where Uncle Jase is at, working.
“Babe, can we stop at the gas station? I’m craving hot fries, ice cream, and orange juice,” I asked using my sweet voice once we were in the car.
He chuckled, nodding, “Of course.” He stopped at the nearest gas station and grabbed what I asked for and a Pepsi for him.
“Thank ya, baby,” I gave him a sweet kiss when he handed me my cravings.
“Is Erin letting the family know about the whole age difference thing?” Derrick asked when he turned down the street of the hospital.
“I think she might if they asked.” I replied.
“Well that’s good, I guess.” He stated, pulling into a parking spot. We got out and walked hand-in-hand to the front desk to sign in.
“Jennifer King,” The nurse called at the door. We got up and followed her to a room in the back.
“Welcome,” Dr. Turner greeted us, “My, you’ve gotten big. We may have to check for triplets,” She said, hopefully joking.
I laid down on the bed and waited for the cold jelly but this time is was warm. I guess they invested in some jelly warmers. “Are you ready to know what they are?” She asked.
“Yes and are you sure there isn’t three babies?” I enquired. “I am huge and I keep having dreams that I have with Bentley playing with a little boy and two girls who are around the same age.”
“I’m almost positive.” She laughed. “You are having, drums roll please, two baby girls,” She stated. I noticed the tear that fell down my face. I can’t believe I’m having two baby girls.
“I love you, babe,” Derrick kissed me softly with a tear gliding down his face.
“I love you too,” I replied.
“We are coming to a critical time in the pregnancy until birth of the twins. Pregnancy with twins is a tricky one. Less room equals more problems. So with that, be careful and don't overdue anything. Keep calm and don't stress. I will see you in two weeks,” Dr. Turner pronounced before walking out of the room.
“I told everybody to get to the house because we know the sex,” Derrick stated as we pulled into the driveway. I nodded my head and got out of the car.
I bet she’s having both boys.
I bet she’s having both girls.
I bet she’s having one boy and one girl.
I heard my family in the room arguing about what I’m having. When I walked in everybody got quiet. “I’m having…” I trailed on making them groan with frustration. I chuckled evilly, “Two baby girls!” I shouted, happily. Everybody was ecstatic.
“Congratulations,” they all said at once.
“Now we can start working on the room.” I looked up at Derrick with adoration in my eyes.
“Yes, we can.” Derrick said, smiling down at me.
The next day, Derrick picked up paint on his way home from work and I decided to paint the girls’ room hot pink. “Make sure you put that face mask thing on so you don’t inhale the fumes,” Derrick stated. I did what he said and started painting the room hot pink.
“Is Bentley asleep, yet?” I asked, making sure so that he wasn’t in the way or near the fumes.
“Yeah, he passed out as soon as I laid him down.” Derrick chuckled along with me. He is so easy to put down for naps or even to sleep. After we finished playing and painting we decided to wake Bentley up to go to the park while the paint dries.
“Wake up, baby,” I whispered, shaking Bentley lightly. He mumbled a little but kept his eyes closed. “Do you want to go to the park?” I asked, still shaking him, lightly.
“Park!” He shot up out of the bed. I clutched my stomach, laughing.
“Come on,” I told him through my laughter. We packed up and got in the car.
Before I could see it coming, bright headlights flashed before my eyes. I heard the metal grinding against each other. “Mommy!” I heard Bentley cry out before everything faded into darkness.
My eyes fluttered open but my vision was blurry. Before I could say anything, “Babe, I’m so sorry. I didn’t see the car coming. I was afraid you’d never wake up.” Derrick rubbed my forehead. I noticed he had a bandage above his eye.
The memories of the ride to the park flashed back to me. All Bentley wanted to do was go play at the park and we didn't even make it. “Bentley! Where is my baby!? Are my babies okay!?” I shouted, tears flooding to my eyes.
“Ma’am, the boy is in the ICU. He is in critical condition. I’m not saying he won’t make it but there is a small chance he won’t. Two of the babies are fine, but I’m afraid you miscarried the third one. I apologize, ma’am.” The doctor stepped in; noticing Derrick couldn’t stop his sobs to tell me.
“Third one? But I’m only having twins. Can I see my baby, please?” I sobbed. “I just want to see my baby!”
“Ma’am, your leg is broken and he can’t have visitors, right now. Yes, you were caring triplets, two girls and a boy. The boy was undeveloped and wouldn’t have survived with or without the wreck. When the wreck happened, somehow the baby moved in front of the girls and that's what saved them. Your doctor may have not seen the third baby because he was hiding behind the other ones and for some reason he was just undetectable. I’m so sorry. I will let you know when you can see Bentley.” The Doctor informed.
I couldn’t help the sob that escaped. Derrick scooted me over and slid in next to me, wrapping his arms around me. “Get away from me. This is your fault!” I shouted through my sobs. I knew it wasn’t his fault but I couldn’t help it. The sobs came more rapidly and I couldn’t stop. “I’m sorry, babe.” I cried again. Derrick rubbed my arm up and down, crying into my neck.
“Me too, baby. Me too.”
Before I knew it I fell asleep, no longer wanting to be awake knowing that Bentley is hurt and my third baby is gone before I even get to meet him. Why? Why did this have to happen to us?
