Emma stared at the clock on her bedside table. It was 3am. She let out a rough sigh. What the young woman would give to get a good, proper amount of sleep. Her phone was downstairs charging in her parent's room. It was just one of the few new, and in her opinion, stupid rules that Mary Margaret has introduced since she and Regina were forced to break up.
It's been two weeks, and this is generally how it's been. The girl would wake up around 2am sometimes earlier, sometimes later, after about an hour or two of sleep and just lie there till morning. Sometimes she would read, it was an effective way for her to pass the time.
Mary Margaret has now got these semi-strict rules over her phone. She's allowed to have it for school, or if she's out with the girls. Once she gets home it goes to Mary Margaret. It's a giant pile of bullshit in Emma's opinion.
Cora was told about the 'arrangement' and has been placing some rules of her own. For example, Emma isn't allowed over to Zelena's unless she is present. Under no circumstances is she to be in the house if it's just Regina home. They all seem to be working together to keep the pair as far apart as possible.
For Emma, the nightmares seem to be getting worst. The worst one has come true and now it feels like the others are inevitable. The blonde feels like it's only a matter of time before she loses everyone else she cares for as well.
School is slightly different from how it has been these past few months. Emma would go into Regina's class, sit in her usual seat at the front of the room and stare at her for the lesson; that much is the same. The older woman would ask the girl how she's doing but everything that used to happen no longer happens. The way the girl used to stay in her classroom some days for lunch, stealing kisses between class, the flirty glances and comments; all of it stopped.
.
Emma let out a harsh sigh as she pushed back her thick duvet. The girl walked quietly down the small ladder and into the kitchen.
The girl opened the fridge allowing a low beam of light to seep into the room. She grabbed a bottle of water and sighed as she took a small sip of the cold liquid.
A soft cough from behind her caused her to jump. The blonde turned around to see David standing behind her. He stared at the girl with worry and concern.
Emma frowned, "hi" she mumbled.
The tall man let out a soft sigh, "you okay, Em?" He asked gently.
"I'm lacking so much sleep I'm surprised I can still walk properly" she scoffed the annoyance evident in her tone.
David has been slightly more sympathetic over the whole situation. He thinks that Mary Margaret is overreacting and that she'll come to her senses eventually but somehow, Emma doubts that. Mary Margaret seems to know exactly what she's doing.
"I'm sorry, Emma" the man mumbled softly.
"It's okay, dad. None of this is your fault" she muttered taking another sip of the water.
"It's mine. It's my fault. It's my fault for getting involved with Regina. It's my fault for getting so attached to her. It's my fault for falling in love with the beautiful brunette." The girl ranted to herself.
David laid his hand gently on the blonde's arm, "it's not your fault either" he whispered.
Emma frowned; in these few months the man has come to know her so well.
"You can't help who you fall in love with, Emma. That's how it is. It's unpredictable" he explained.
The blonde flinched, "how did you know that I..." the girl trailed off unable to find the words to continue.
"Of course I'm in love with her, but I've never told anyone, not even her. The thought of it scares me."
David chuckled softly, "when you brought her in that day to talk to us. It was the way you looked at her, the way you held on to her like your life depended on it, how hesitant you were to let her go and speak to Mary Margaret. It was like she was your entire world. It was in your eyes, Em" he explained.
Emma bit her lower lip as she felt tears begin to form in her eyes. The blonde felt a tear slip down her cheek and within seconds David had her wrapped in his arms.
The young woman buried her face in his chest, "I miss her, dad" she mumbled softly.
"Missing her was probably the understatement of the year. It was like a part of me was missing and I had no idea whether I would get that part back or not." She thought to herself.
David held her tight and rubbed her back in a comforting motion, "I know, sweetheart. I know" he whispered.
Emma stood there for a moment wrapped in his strong arms as he comforted her. It was no Regina, but it helped calm her down a bit.
The blonde pulled away and David shot her a small, reassuring smile, "everything will work out the way it's supposed to. I promise" he said gently.
The blonde nodded slowly at his words. Truthfully, the girl didn't believe.
He smiled, "go see if you can get a bit more sleep, Emma" he told her gently.
The girl nodded slowly, "night, dad" she mumbled.
David placed a soft kiss on her forehead, "goodnight, Em" he whispered.
.
Emma headed back up the stairs and slipped back into bed. The blonde laid there staring at the ceiling.
"Everything will work out the way it's supposed to." His words echoed in the girl's ears. She let out a soft sigh. Everything seemed to be completely against her and Regina right now. Emma doesn't see how anything could work out. Unless Mary Margaret magically changes the way she feels about mine and Regina's relationship overnight, which would probably take some form of miracle.
