Nothing.

For three hours. Just nothing.

By the time I even considered sleep, I had burnt the note and thrown the ashes out the window. This was clearly an especially malicious, manipulative way of getting in my head, and at this point, I can't consider hating him more. That can't be in this realm of possibility.

Sleep was rough. I tousled and turned, imagining what he could possibly look like or even be like. I make a personal note in the back of my mind to strangle him if I ever get the chance.

A knock on my door woke me.

I had barely enough time to throw a robe over my shoulders, toss my hair into a bun and answer it.

Flowers are the only thing used. Then, a head of auburn hair and a pair of hazel eyes peek out from behind it. Kegan, I should have known. The crush I had all during school that was never reciprocated until after, when he approached me and admitted his feelings. I had turned him down, since coming out of school meant training to take down Fate.

Everyday since, he has been working to change my mind. It's admirable, considering my inevitable circumstances. Most people here refuse to get close to me in case they upset Fate.

Ridiculous.

"Good morning sunshine!" He says brightly, as if it's supposed to make me feel better. He thrusts the flowers into my hands. Sunflowers, how fitting.

"Thank you," I say honestly. They are beautiful. "The thought means a lot to me."

I hope Zaid remembers to put these in a case, I think, as I come turn to rest them on my kitchen bench before returning to the door. Kegan is straightening his clothes, brushing away the excess pollen.

"I just wanted to come over and wish you luck," he says, then instantly cringes. "Sorry...I mean, say I'll miss you."

I smile softly. Kegan, however, does not seem to be sharing this moment with me, as his eyes glaze over with terror, and he stumbles back a few steps. I frown.

"Is everything-"

"I apologise to cut this short," a smooth voice says from behind me. "But I've booked Zayla's time."

Every inch of my body goes rigid. Goes cold. Perhaps even my heart stopped beating for a second, as if the hint of one single, easily distinguishable voice was a deadly poison. Even feeling their hand wrap securely around my robed arm, clenching very gently. A simple prompt of dominance.

"I...It's fine," Kegan stutters, giving me one last pained look before he turns and runs in the opposite direction. Never have I seen someone so terrified.

I don't turn around. Instead, I watch him run, wishing I could to.

The hand releases, and I hear footsteps walking away.
