The images of Lucky melted away, leaving a charcoal colored darkness. Fate stared through it, trying to make sense of what he'd seen. How could it be that he would find himself with Lucky, living a life with her? Was it connected to the shift he had felt in his powers? Still deep within the contours of his mind, Fate reeled.

The point of a mate was that it was singular. Once in a lifetime, or, for the Immortals, in an eternity. Could this have something to do with the Immortal realm? Were the doctrines changing, after all this time?

Was it possible to have more than one mate?
Another woman appeared to him. It was Zayla, but not as he'd last seen her, tense and angry. She was not as Nico and Seff and Zaid had described her to him, cruel and bloodthirsty. She was as he had known her in the Immortal realm, before Wrath. She walked toward him, her smile intimate, meant just for him. Her golden-brown hair tumbled around her shoulders her and her bronze eyes sparkled as she reached for him. She was laughing at his hesitance.

"Come," she laughed, her voice warm, and the familiar sound moved through his body, warming its darkest corners, coiling around his heart.

He moved toward her, disbelieving, but, when he took her into his arms, she was warm and alive. His hands roved her body, testing her permanence, her skin unbelievably soft beneath his hands, like silken velvet. She laughed and he could feel it reverberate in his chest as she wrapped her arms around him, holding him tight.

She'd been hesitant at first, but the craps player—Parker, as it turned out—was fun. His light eyes were disarming, and his accent made his voice sound honey-sweet. Lucky found herself leaning closer to him as the night went on.

"You been to Vegas before?" Parker asked, swirling his gin.

Lucky shook her head. "It's my first time."

"Well, assuming you couldn't have known that you'd meet me, what brought you here?"

"I came to play in the poker tournament."

Parker's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "That so? You must be more than just lucky to play in that tournament. I saw the signs in the lobby. Best in the world are going to be here."

Lucky shrugged. "That's me."

Parker smiled, his eyes ranging over her. "And where'd a pretty little girl like you learn to play poker? I don't play much but catch the games around town every now and then. There aren't too many lady players."
