"There you are," Nico said, relieved, as she spotted Zaid collapsed against the wall next to the ice machine.

Zaid looked up, scowling. He was holding a handful of melting ice to his nose. "Leave me alone."

Nico rolled her eyes. "Please, Zaid. I have no time for the lone wolf routine. Just come back to the room." He didn't move. "We have food," she added. She smiled when Zaid grumbled, getting up to his feet.

"You said you had food," Zaid protested, looking in disgust at the half-eaten jar of peanut butter and the mangled loaf of bread.

"If you don't like it, feel free to order room service," Seff said, sharply. "Just have them put it on our tab."

Nico ignored them. "Seff and I have to go. We're doing some work for Fate—"

"You're working for that bastard?" Zaid looked between them, furious.

"No—not really," Nico said, quickly. "Anyway, you're going to need to stay put while we're gone."

"What? Here?" Zaid asked, his mouth full of bread and peanut butter.

Seff shrugged, looking annoyed. "It may be a dump, but it's a good place for hiding out."
Zaid swallowed his sandwich. "Is it? I found you. Fate found you."

"You need to stay covered," Nico said, sharply. "Especially out of Fate's sight." She stood from the bed. "We should be back before dawn."

Zaid shoved another sandwich in his mouth, looking more wolf than human. Seff made an irritated sound.

"I'm going to take a piss," Seff said, stepping to the bathroom.

Nico looked at Zaid. "What?" Zaid asked, defensively.

"Nothing," Nico said, shaking her head. She folded her arms across her chest.

They stared at each other for a moment, the silence between them seeming to grow louder somehow. When it hit its zenith Nico turned, abruptly, and walked to the window, peering out. She cleared her throat. "Just stay out of sight, okay?" she muttered. "We've lost enough of us already."

"You remind me of someone," Zaid said, starting another sandwich.

"Yeah? Who's that?" Nico asked, her eyes still out the window.
