Chapter 2 : Turning A New Leaf

Mother might have just been right. The city is a dangerous place.

Me and Billy had arrived two in the afternoon. He stopped outside a local market. I explored the area while he sold his fresh produce.

This side of the town was basically meant for traders. There were stalls collecting different types of products. Mostly food and clothing. The rest were house ware and toys and other minor less crucial things.

I only had a little money with me at the moment and I didn't want to waste a penny here. I had set my mind in getting a place to stay. That was my first priority that I simply have to implement.

'Hey Elena', Billy joined me ,'Me and Siddy over there have to go. We can't ride a carriage inside the city. I guess this is goodbye'

I looked at the young man who fell in love with me, got refused and still helped me. Before I knew it, I had cupped his face and brushed my lips upon his,'Yes this is goodbye'

He pulls me by the waist and kisses me more properly. I can feel his hand brushing my hair. When he finally let goes he began looking at my eyes in a worried look.

'You kiss me only when it's time to say goodbye', He says.

'You love me even when I don't', I say.

'Was the kiss just to satisfy me then? I don't need any satisfaction from you Elena! You stole my first kiss. And it wasn't a loving one as well', he screwed up his hair in frustration.

Oh god, what have I done? I just presumed he had kissed other women before but now I knew I was wrong. I'll admit that I've had short term relationships with other men and I've certainly kissed them. This was no different to me.

I have done damage from a higher level,'I'm sorry'.

'You're sorry?', Billy whined,'You have no idea how much I love you do you?'

'I do'

'Then why refuse me like this? Give me a chance. I want that kiss to mean something', he argued.

'Okay', I said; not knowing what else to say,'I have to go Billy'

He looked at me and I knew I had hurt him badly. Guilt washed over me like a tsunami. I was drowning in it. I needed to forget Billy. Forget my old life and start afresh. Only to remember to visit my mother and send her the cash. That's all the connection I will keep from my old life.

I turn away from Billy, ready to run if I had to but he caught my arm in one swift movement,'Say you love me'

'I love you'

He paused and looked at me.

'As a friend', I continue.

He lets go of my arm and I walk away from him. This had to be the worst goodbye I had ever gotten in my whole cursed life.

Deciding not to get a cab, I walked all the way; carrying my suitcase to every apartment complex, looking for a suitable environment to live on till I get better money to purchase a proper house.

At the fifth complex I found a small apartment on the third floor. It wasn't much; Two bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom with a small living space. It was already furnished with the essentials I needed. It wasn't the least bit the cleanest. It could use a sweep or two but at least it wasn't hideous. Only the floor required cleaning.

I decided to take it.

It was a good rent and I had enough money left to spend on some cleaning detergents and food for a week maybe.
