Chapter 35 : Another Ball. Another Gown.

*Elena's View*

Anastasia -Stacy-  is throwing a ball. Apparently it's to celebrate me and Edward's engagement.

I mean, I'm grateful but I'd rather be one less event. I've attended enough for a lifetime.

I used to think that princesses live a life of unicorns and rainbows and cupcakes but I was wrong.

It's just another ball. Another gown. Another tiara. Another heel. Another dance. The list goes on for another few miles.

I was in my room. Alice was with me. She was helping me decide what to wear when I couldn't be even more bothered if I went naked.

Although I try my best to reserve that outfit only for Edward. He'd find deep pleasure in it. I'm almost sure of it.

'Try this on. I think it's okay', Alice said, Handing me a dress after she dug my whole closet inside out.

I nodded and changed. It was a silky material, different from all the usual puffy ball gowns. It was long and silver; it showed a lot of my bare back. The front exposed a very limited amount of my cleavage,'I guess this will do'

Alice examined me and whistled,'Girl, Edward might just want to tear that from your body when he sees you. It's teasing'

'Didn't know you're a lesbian to know the feeling', I chuckled.

'Oh yeah', she grinned ,'You're my baby girl more than his right?'

I laughed. I missed her so much. I know I was lucky to ever have a friend like her in my pathetic (not so pathetic anymore) life.

'I want to tear that off from your body... it's teasing', Edward had told me when he saw me.

I almost snorted; remembering what Alice had said. She must have been some genie. She could read the future better than the wackos on the street who charge a dollar just for looking at a fake crystal ball.

He looked at me,'You seem happy by my comment'

'Alice predicted it', I laughed ,'She knew exactly what you were going to say'

He looked at me and rolled his eyes,'That girl is going to ruin my surprise comments now. How much more a devil could she get?'

'Be nice to her', I chuckled ,'She's invited'

'Says who!'

'Your mother', I reply with a grin. He slaps his forehead as a reply and grunts ignorantly.

He looks at me,'Let's just get this ball over with. I'll try to avoid Alice'

'That's better than being mean at least', I chuckled pointedly.

He glares at me before bursting into laughter. His eyes twinkling as they eyed mine. He saw me. And not just from the outside. He saw my heart. He saw my soul.

*Edward's View*

Man, why did they have to invite Alice? Was that just necessary? My mother does have the tendency to befriend stupid and immature people. People who resemble herself as such.

At least Elena would be by my side.

Or maybe not.

Soon as we entered the ballroom, we were separated by the mass crowd that had been invited. One second she was here and the next gone. I catch a glimpse of Alice pulling her away, giggling furiously.

Why does it always have to be that Alice? Can't she let me and Elena wait in peace? I swear, Elena was the only one keeping me from hunting Alice down and shipping her away to Africa where she belongs. With the animals. Her relatives.

'Edward', a feminine voice greets me from my right. I turn to see Raina, dressed to impress in a puffy pink ball gown; hair in a suffocatingly tight bun.

'Raina', I let out puzzled. I didn't realize she was invited,'Were you invited or did you plan to crash?'

She looked at me maliciously,'Crash'

'Then let me do the honors in calling the guards to escort you out', I grumbled. Just when I was about to, someone cling onto my hand. I turn to see Elena who was staring at Raina with a daring face.

Raina bit her lip,'How long will you play this game Edward?'

'What game?', I asked, confused. But whatever it is... nothing good comes out of Raina's mouth.

'You love me. Yet, you're engaged to her', Raina replies.

'Raina with all do respect, please go annoy someone else's life. Not ours', Elena tells her with as much of kindness she could have probably mustered.

But that was very little. I'm not sure she even tried to act polite. I grin, that's my girl. Damn, I got a feisty one.

Raina growled at her,'Stay out of it Elena'

'Why?', I suddenly blurt out ,'She's my fiancé. She's in the matter as much as I am. She's got that right'

'Do you really love her?', Raina whispered. It took be my surprise. Out of all this, she genuinely sounded hurt,'Do you?'

But, I won't lie to her to make her happy,' Yes. I love Elena with all my heart and I'll continue to do so till my last breath'

Raina stiffened and straightened her back,'Then you leave me no choice'

She reached behind and grabbed a small knife which was hidden behind a layer in her dress. Before I could react, she aimed and threw it directly at Elena's shoulder.

She looked at Raina with horror as she stumbled back. Only in the last minute did I realize what was happening and reached out and grabbed Elena before she reached the floor.

In that moment of her being still in my arms, every other sound was just background. It was only me and her. But her being quiet made everything so clear.

The crowd had gasped and had given their full attention to us; trapping us in a curious circle.

I hear Raina's grunts of protest as guards swarm over her. I hear Derick shouting at her as Oliver tries his best to hold him back.

Then barely a whisper came from the limp body that was Elena in my arms.

'Edward'
