Part 13

The doorbell to Freddi’s tinkled, and I looked up instinctively from the cup that I was cleaning.

“Welcome!” I greeted cheerfully. I understood that there really wasn’t much of a need to greet every customer who came in, but I just wanted to. It was part of what made me love my job. Technically, there wasn’t much to love from being a waitress at Freddi’s, but I just had a sense of satisfaction whenever I saw anyone enjoying the desserts I prepared for them. Watching the satisfied faces made me satisfied, and that was how I found my smile every day despite working long tiring hours at not-so-fantastic wages.

Vergil’s cold blue eyes scanned the diner quickly more by instinct than anything before it landed quickly on me. I was about to ask him why –for the first time since I’ve worked here –he had dropped by, before I reasoned with myself not to. With Vergil, I had always been consciously trying not to appear to be daft, or maybe even a little stupider. I really didn’t like being on the wrong side of Vergil’s scale, and I was trying my best to stay away from being glared at. At least knowing about his family now made him slightly more receptive to me –and that meant less glaring and giving me silent ‘I-wish-you-were-gone’ looks.

“Sasha’s been in an accident.” He spoke lowly as he reached the counter, eyes holding on to mine firmly. There was something in those eyes that spoke of concern and hurry, but none of his composure betrayed the emotion he must be feeling inside. A tiny part of me was awed at Vergil was still keeping everything together, being all calm and collected, but I suspected a little freaking out occurring on the inside.

Not that I was going to make any needless comment about it for him to judge me about later.

“Oh my, that’s terrible!” I exclaimed. “Is she alright?”

“She’s not in danger, but needs to undergo an operation for an arm fracture.” Vergil replied quickly, still holding my eye contact firmly.

“Now?”

Vergil nodded.

“Why are you here? You should be at the hospital waiting for her operation to be done.”

By now, he was looking more and more uncomfortable, but his eye contact never lost itself on me. His fingers began twitching a little –at least from what I could see before he took his hand off the counter. I saw him flexing his fingers over Yamato at his side and a muscle in his jaw ticked.

“I… need your help.” He spoke after a long moment of hesitation, and I finally realized why he was suddenly so uncomfortable. This was Vergil standing in front of me… looking for help.

I understood from long ago that he was a fiercely independent man, and tended to look down on people weaker than he. To have him request for help from someone like me –someone he viewed to be a lot weaker than him –it must really get on his nerves. Oh, if Dante were here…

Still, I didn’t want to do anything that could potentially piss this guy off. And if he came to look for help from me instead of anyone else, it must be about his family –which he had conveniently neglected to tell anyone about.

“Sure, what do you need?” I enquired quickly, hoping that I could show him with my eyes that I was totally sincere in wanting to help him out.

“Leon…” He began, but I got the gist of it immediately. Of course I couldn’t expect for him to take care of Leon while he was fretting over his wife, right?

“Where is that boy? I’ll take care of him while Sasha’s in operation. You just stay vigil by her side.” I interrupted quickly, knowing I’d saved the man a whole load of trouble when his eyes literally softened in relieve at my question.
