Part 21
“Vergil! Vergil, you need to control yourself! Listen! She has a heartbeat! She still breathes!” The imploring voice came from someone I never thought I would ever hear –Dante. I could hear pure pleading in that tone, and it shocks me how Dante finally seems flustered and lost his cool.
“Why isn’t she awake yet!” This must really be Opposite-Day, because I drift back into consciousness slowly, hearing Vergil’s usually calm voice in something more than a simple raise of voice. He is shouting.
“I don’t know, but you don’t want her waking up to your demonic side running rampant, do you? Even if it’s Lily waking up, you don’t want to scare our sister, don’t you? You care for Lily too.” Dante observed –a little obviously –but I felt a strong vibration of the ground near to me, accompanied with the sound of what sounded like flesh hitting the ground -like a fist hitting the ground.
“Argh!” Vergil yelled, as if venting his frustration and his unfounded anger. What was wrong with my lover? What has worried him so? I have never thought Vergil to be a man who would lose his emotions and his cool so easily. Even in a crisis, Vergil had always been a level-headed man. What could have possibly happened?
Cracking heavy eyelids open so that I could get a scope of the situation, I was surprised to find myself in unfamiliar surroundings. It appeared to be some sort of green land outside of a town or city, but what struck me was the fact that it wasn’t green. A large crater had been pummeled into the earth, and I could only imagine the horrors that had happened here.
Stirring, I turned my aching head towards the sound of Vergil and Dante’s voice, and found my lover on one knee, a fist bleeding but resting on the hard ground. Dante stood beside him, a perplexed look hung upon his face.
“You don’t understand, Dante!” Vergil continued to yell, punching the ground again and again despite his already bleeding fist. I wanted very much to go over to stop him, but it seemed like every inch of my body hurt and I couldn’t even budge a single bit.
“Then maybe you should explain it to me, Vergil,” Dante observed again, uneasily, “Calmly.”
Both Vergil’s fists clenched tight, and he let out another yell, punching the earth with both fists now as if it could release his anger. Silence splayed out between the both of them that Vergil took to regain himself, his back faced Dante.
“You don’t understand… The moment Lily breaks free, Leah is doomed to die. The moment we end Mundus together as the children of Sparda, Leah is doomed to perish from this plane. I do not know if she will ever return to her family. I do not know if she will ever be happy again. I do not know when I will see her again, or if our last words were…” Vergil’s words trailed off, as if he couldn’t bear to say more.
“But why?” Dante asked, still not understanding. I didn’t blame him, for Dante had pretty much been uncaring of most things related to me. While Dante still treated me like the annoyance in his life, at least there was warmth in my heart to know that at least he still cared for me.
“There are two worlds, Dante. Leah’s and ours. Lily belongs to ours. Leah’s to hers. But Lily, being fully demon, was never born here. Her soul was taken into the other world, and she was born as Leah. When Leah came into our world, into Limbo, she became part and whole of Lily. She could only exist where Lily doesn’t. And now that Lily is fully back in this world…”
“It means that Leah is gone…”
I closed my eyes and drew on what little strength that I had left. I wasn’t sure about anything that had happened, for I had been visiting Azazel in heaven after I was caught by Mundus, but for the moment everything seemed safe and sound.
