Eddie watched another drop of rain roll down his window, lightning flashed periodically and lit up his room but he just watched the storm, drenching Derry and the clouds covering it in darkness. Lightning flashed again and a face was illuminated outside his window. Eddie screamed and jumped back. Another burst of light- it was Richie. His hair was plastered against his face, and his glasses were streaked with water. Richie knocked on the window and Eddie got up quickly, opening it and pulling him inside. Eddie sat Richie on his bed and ran to the bathroom, getting towels and dry clothes from his closet. Eddie handed him the clothes and towels and showed Richie to the bathroom.
Minutes later, Richie still hadn't come out. Eddie walked into the bathroom.
"The clothes might be too small but-" his voice trailed off at the same time Richie looked up, panic in his eyes. But they both knew Eddie had seen. Seen the red gashes, traveling up Richie's arms. It had been hard to tell in the rain, but now Eddie could see Richie was crying. Eddie walked forward slowly and took one of Richie's shaking hands, and then the other. He held both of Richie's hands in his smaller ones, and looked at his arms for a long time. Multiple cuts, some more recent than others, raced along his forearms. Eddie felt his eyes get hot, but he ignored the tears. He lifted his head slowly, looking at Richie.
"Why..?" The one word was all Eddie could get out. His voice was quavering and the tears spilled over, streaming down his face. Anytime someone hurt Richie, Eddie got beyond mad. But this time- his heart ached and he felt sick to his stomach. Because this time, it was Richie who had hurt himself.
"They don't love me Eddie... how am I supposed to be okay with that? A little boy- a little boy is supposed to grow up with his parents. They're supposed to be the first ones to love him..."
The way Richie spoke, with a soft, sadness Eddie had never heard before, broke his heart. He knew he couldn't be mad at Richie for this. So he let go of Richie's hands, and wrapped his arms around his neck instead. Eddie was smaller but right now he knew Richie needed someone, so he pulled the still trembling boy close to him and rubbed his back softly. He felt Richie's arms wrap around him tightly and he knew Richie was crying again. Richie's body shook with sobs, and soon Eddie couldn't help it. He was crying too, hugging himself closer to Richie and making promises. Promising Richie that he was always there, promising himself to never take for granted what he and Richie had again. They made their way back to Eddies room, and Eddie sat down with him on his bed. The two boys were still hugging each other as if the other one was his lifeline, and neither of them minded. Eddies smaller frame fit perfectly into Richie's arms, and Eddie could feel Richie's breathing become more even and controlled.
Finally, they ended up under Eddie's covers, Eddie still snuggled against Richie, rubbing his back softly. Richie's eyes closed, and soon his face and body relaxed, his lips parting slightly. In his sleep, his arms loosened around Eddie but he never let go. Eddie closed his eyes too, listening to the storm and promising. Promising Richie that no matter what, they would make it. Out of this town and away from everything. Eddie promised Richie a better life, one he deserved. And Eddie didn't care that he was one person in billions, one with no power over the way things happened, he would keep his promise to Richie.
