"Richie, no. Out is this." Stan said, frustrated as he showed Richie the proper sign for the fifth time.
"Okay, okay I'm sorry. I've got it." Richie nodded, signing along with Stan.
"Now try it all together." Stan said, signing the phrase 'Will you got out with me' and watching Richie copy it.
"You did it!" Stan grinned, ruffling Richie's curls as Stan's mom called them for school.
"I'm so nervous." Richie said, walking down the stairs two at a time as Stan's mom got their backpacks for them.
"Don't be, you know the motions. It's muscle memory. And Eddie's gonna say yes."
"But what if-"
"What is nothing Richie. Eddie will say yes. Now come on, or you won't get to ask." Stan put his bag on both shoulders and got onto the yellow bus parked outside his house. Richie got on after, sitting in their usual seat. His leg bounced up and down the entire ride, his hands messing with anything they could find.
"Calm down Richie." Stan laughed, climbing off the bus and turning to face his best friend. "You've got this."
Richie smiled softly, nodding and fixing his hair. The school doors opened, and before Richie even turned around, he knew Eddie and Bill had walked in. When Richie did turn around, his heart fluttered as always, but this time it continued to speed up. His palms grew sweaty and he began nervously fidgeting with his backpack straps again.
He felt Stan's hands against his bag, and felt himself being pushed forwards. Richie stumbled to a halt right in front of Eddie, who looked up in surprise as he had not heard Richie approach.
Bill stepped away, standing next to Stan as they watched the two exchange awkward waves and Richie fidget with his clothes and hair.
"You've got this Rich!" Stan said encouragingly, having the advantage of helping Richie, since Eddie couldn't hear him. Richie nodded and turned to face Eddie, taking a deep breath and moving his fingers slowly as he signed 'Will you go out with me?'
Eddie's eyes widened in surprise as he watched Richie, signing shakily. His eyes began to water. Richie had learned sign language for him. Richie was practicing another language just to communicate his feelings for Eddie. Richie was going out of his way to make Eddie feel accepted and loved in Derry. The overflow of realization and emotions caused Eddie to do something he never thought he would do.
He kissed Richie.
Richie's eyes widened in surprise, but he quickly closed them and melted into the kiss. His hand found Eddie's cheek, cupping it softly as he kissed him. Richie ignored Bill and Stan's excited cheers, pulling away and resting his forehead against Eddie's. Eddie grinned up at him, his cheeks turning red as they usually did around Richie.
They knew that a relationship between the two would be difficult, but Richie was willing to work to learn more sign, and what he didn't know was Eddie was working with a speech teacher. He was learning to say 'I love you'. It was only one phrase, but it would mean the world to Richie. However, in the moment as the two laced hands and began their walk down the hallway, every problem seemed to stay behind them as they walked in pure bliss.
