"I'm moving away." Eddie sniffed, hugging his best friend.
"You- you can't move away..." Richie began to cry with the young boy, hugging him tightly. "We're gonna go to second grade together!"
Eddie just hugged him, both boys knew their friendship was different than others, they just didn't know how...
Richie shook his head, snapping out of the memory. That was years ago, he didn't know why he still thought about it. He was sure Eddie didn't. Instead, Richie focused on the clock. He had two more minutes until the day was over.
"And class- be sure to be on your best behavior for our new student tomorrow." The teacher finished as she began packing up her things. Best behavior? That was the gayest thing he'd ever heard- and Richie had heard a lot of gay things.
People talked excitedly about the new kid, all wondering what he looked like and what he did but Richie just felt bad for another poor kid that had to live in this shithole. Eddie was lucky to get out. The bell finally rang, and Richie forced the thoughts of Eddie from his mind again and bolted out of the classroom.
On the walk home, Richie passed Eddie's old house. The house he'd known was long gone, newly decorated and some kid, his older brother and his mom lived there. Every time Richie saw that house, he thought of the day Eddie left.
Richie watched his best friend carry out boxes, tears in both their eyes. He didn't want his best friend to leave. He hated Eddie's parents for making him go. Richie ran over to Eddie and hugged him for what felt like the millionth time since he'd gotten the news.
"Please don't go Eds!" He cried, and Eddie hugged him back, crying with Richie.
"I don't want to..." He sniffed, "Mommy's making me..."
"Eddie bear, get in the car." His mom called from the passenger seat, but Richie didn't let go.
"Rich... I gotta go..." Eddie breathed heavily, crying much harder.
"Wait-" Richie pushed his glasses up, wiping his eyes, "take this. Remember me..." He handed Eddie one of his t-shirts from their elementary school. Eddie took the shirt in his hands and nodded, hugging Richie once more before getting into the back seat.
Richie stood in the driveway, crying alone as the car pulled out. He saw Eddie's face peak out the back window over all the boxes, a forced smile on his face as he waved goodbye. And that was the last time Richie had seen him.
Richie hadn't realized he was stopped in front of the house, staring with a single tear on his cheek, until Stan came over and messed up his hair.
"Watcha doin Rich?" He asked, looking at the house. Stan hadn't known Eddie, none of the Losers had. Richie and Eddie were each other's best and only friends as kids, it was almost a year Richie spent alone until he met Stan and his friends.
"Nothin..." Richie shook his head and took a deep breath, getting back into his sarcastic and happy persona.
"Well cmon, I'm having everyone over to my house. My dads out." Stan said, getting back on his bike. Richie walked alongside Stan as he rode slowly to his house. All the Losers were great friends and though he'd never say it, Richie loved them. But none of them were Eddie.

The next day, Richie chained his bike in front of the school and walked in with Bill and Stan. It amused him when he third wheeled with them, he knew they were into each other but wouldn't admit it. Richie saw a small boy being pushed into the main office by his mother- he didn't look old enough to be in high school. Richie craned his neck to get a second glance but the boy was completely hidden by his mother. He shook his head, not sure why he was so interested.
"I'll see you homos later" Richie flashed a peace sign and Bill and Stan rolled their eyes, waving and going their separate ways. The day droned on forever as usual for Richie, and by his last period he was ready to jump out the window. He sat in his usual seat in the back, putting his head down on the desk. He was just ready to doze off for the next 80 minutes when he heard it.
"Class, this is our new student. Edward Kaspbrak."
