Richie made his way to the bridge, knife in hand and dread building up in the pit of his stomach. He could never tell Eddie how he felt about him. Not after Bowers... the word echoed in his mind. Faggot. This town hated Richie's kind. Eddie would hate him. But he wanted someone to know. He wanted Eddie to be the mark he left on Derry. So, as a surge of confidence took over, he ran to the middle of the bridge and knelt down, putting the knife to the wood and scraping in a sloppy R, then a plus sign, and then he took a deep breath and carved the E. He stared at it, those two letters together, now a permanent mark on this town. Richie's last 'fuck you' to the town and everyone in it. He felt a stupid grin take over his face, he was proud of himself. He had admitted his feelings and he'd done something about it. Sure, he would've loved to tell Eddie if a happy ending were guaranteed, but this was Richie and he knew it wouldn't go well.
Richie's thoughts were interrupted by an all too familiar voice. "Richie you're gonna get a splinter, what are you doing here?"
Richie's heart stopped, he was frozen in place, his back to Eddie. Hiding what he had carved. He couldn't move, he felt like one of those stupid red balloons was inflating inside his chest, he couldn't breathe.
"Richie?" He heard the bridge creak as Eddie began to walk towards him and he sprang up and turned to face Eddie, holding the knife behind his back.
"Hey Eds, you might wanna leave this is where your mom and I decided to meet up today." Richie forced out the joke.
"Very funny." Eddie rolled his eyes and smiled, "What do you have in your hands?" he moved forward again to see what Richie was holding.
Richie flinched and backed away, almost like he was scared of Eddie. He was in a sense, scared of losing the only person who's ever made him happy. His heart was pounding in his chest every step Eddie got closer to the carving.
"Richie... what's going on?" Eddie tried to grab behind Richie's back to see what he had, but his eyes travelled past the knife and onto the initials behind it. Richie looked at him, Eddie was so close to him now. Richie saw his eyes widen and he quickly stepped away from Eddie, dropping the knife as his hands began to shake. He felt hot tears burning in his eyes and his whole body was trembling with fear.
"Is this us...?" Eddie broke the silence yet again, pointing at the initials. Richie couldn't speak. He opened his mouth, but nothing came out. He couldn't stop his tears from falling either. Eddie was quickly at his side, hugging Richie tightly.
Richie trembled in his arms and cried, apologizing over and over again. "I'm so sorry Eddie, I'm so sorry I shouldn't have done it!" He cried into the smaller boy's shoulder.
Eddie shook his head quickly, rubbing Richie's back as he cried. "No... Richie I'm not mad at you."
"Y-you don't think I'm a freak?"
"Why would I?" Eddie lifted Richie's face so they could make eye contact, and Richie felt himself calm down almost immediately looking into Eddie's eyes.
"Because... I'm gay." Richie said softly, he'd known it for years but he had never said it out loud before. Never admitted to it in front of anyone but himself.
"Well in that case, I would be a freak too.." Eddie smiled softly, wiping a tear from Richie's cheek. Richie felt himself blush at Eddie's touch.
"You're gay?" Richie asked, and when Eddie nodded he felt his emotions rush over him, filling his body with life again and popping that horrible balloon inside of him. He could breathe, and when he looked back up to meet Eddie's eyes they were closer than they had ever been before. Richie's eyes darted back and forth between Eddie's beautiful brown eyes and his lips. Then, he shut his eyes and let his impulses take over. He kissed Eddie.
And Eddie kissed him back immediately. It was both of their first kisses, and they weren't the best. Richie's glasses were pressed into Eddie's face and they weren't too in sync, but just the feeling of being like this with each other, so close and finally open about their feelings, Richie could've sworn he was in heaven. They pulled away a few seconds later and Richie was a grinning mess. Eddie laughed and hid his face in Richie's chest, knowing he was bright red.
Richie hugged him tightly, he couldn't shake the feeling of kissing Eddie. He had never felt that happy in his entire life. He could've kissed Eddie forever. So he lifted Eddie's face, cupping his cheek softly and kissed him again. This time, their lips moved together perfectly. Richie could feel Eddie grinning against his lips, and Richie couldn't help but grin too, knowing he made Eddie just as happy as Eddie made him.
here's a happy one because we got some angst coming up
