'Dad I'm scared.' my voice was barely a whisper as my father and I stood at the side of the beginning of the walk to the altar. My father stopped fixing his tie and turned to stare at me. Suddenly his arms were around me and I held onto him as tightly as I could, not giving three shits about my makeup and hair. They'd be the last thing anyone would care about if I ended up throwing up from all the nerves.
'Me too baby girl. Me too.' he murmured into my hair. I clutched onto him tighter without showing any signs of letting go. I closed my eyes and nuzzled my head into his familiar scent. 'Dad I don't want to go there, I don't want to do this-' my voice cracked towards the end and I felt my father stiffen. He rubbed comforting circles on my back and let me stay in his embrace.
'I'm so sorry baby. I'm so sorry.' I had never been more nervous about anything my entire life. Perform in front of ten thousand people? No problem. Give business presentations to some of the wealthiest people in the world? Easy. Jump off an aeroplane for the sheer joy of it? Bring it on.
Get married? Yeah, no thanks.
Dad pulled away from me after awhile, rubbing his palms on his trousers. 'Nervous?' I asked in a small voice. 'More than you can imagine.' he says in a small voice. Then he stood up straight as if he's just remembered something and shuffled through his pockets before pulling out a small pale blue box.
'Dad-' I could tell where this was going.
He opened the box and inside was the most beautiful sapphire hairpin I had ever seen. It was so simple yet the blue popped out. 'Dad-' my voice broke again as I choked back tears.
'It was your great-grandmother's. Your great-grandfather gave it to her and they saved it for the third generation's bride.'
I didn't deserve this.
He looked at it for a moment before smiling down at me. 'Something blue.' he murmured as I helped him tuck it into my mane of hair. 'Thank you.' my voice was hardly a whisper.
'No, honey. Thank you!' I smiled at him before looking down at my shoes. 'Why is it called something blue anyway?' I brought my hand up to feel the pin as if to make sure it was still there.
'Because while you're looking all beautiful and it's a happy day, a small part of the whole thing is sad.' His eyes definitely looked sad. I gave him a small smile and then I heard the music start. And it was far from the classic walk down the aisle music. Credits to my brainless best friend there.
'That's our cue.' I heard him say. But he didn't move and neither did I. 'Dad I don't want to do this.' I said again and my dad looked like he was considering shutting the whole thing down for a second. But I knew that in the long run, that would be the worse thing we could do. So before he could react, I put my arm around his and stepped towards the walkway.
'Let's go before I throw up or something.' I mumbled.
All eyes were on me.
Every single male specimen in that room's eyes were bulging out of their sockets as they took my appearance in. Everyone was giving me smiles bigger than the last and that helped a little. It was the first time I had seen the wedding hall, thanks to Ally wanting to keep it a surprise and it blew me away.
I half expected it to be nothing but posh and fancy and prim white and elegant but thanks to Allison, who probably threatened the designers with a bat, the room was a white, rosy peach, rose gold and oak brown themed. Carnations, freesias, delphiniums and lilies decorated the whole space and their floral scents masked the whole air, lightly enough for it to be pleasant.
Fairy lights were twisted around the bouquets and the window frames and small rose gold candles surrounded the whole area.
It was the most beautiful wedding I had ever seen.
