Chapter 39:
~Breeze~
I had trouble looking at myself the next morning. Everything felt so off. What happened last night hung over my head. I felt like I was choking on the air around me. I was so ashamed at what I had done that I could not even bring myself to look in the mirror after my shower, deciding to leave my hair to its natural state.
Helena came into the room later in the day, when I had not gone down to breakfast or lunch, like I always do. She had a funny way of knowing when I was upset lately. Ever since I got all of my memories back, it was like the connect that we knew could be there was. She truly was my sister in every way.
“Hey, you feeling okay?” she asked after closing the door behind her and taking a seat beside me on the bed. “Sean wanted to come check on you, but had some things to take care of. He’s teaching a class on self defense with Hank. Him teaching. Poor kids.”
I cringed at the sound of his name. “Yeah,” was all I said in response.
“What’s wrong? Did you two get in a fight because I would gladly knock some sense into that boy for you. What did he do?”
“It’s not what he did. It’s what I did.”
She frowned at me. “I am not following.”
It was best that I tell her. “Helena, last night I talked to Wade about what we are going to do about the Brotherhood.”
“Okay, Professor X does want you to work with him,” she said slowly trying to get what I was trying to say.
“Well he started talking about how Sean had not fully accepted who I am now that I am not only a mutant, but a rather powerful one. Also, I am not the same Breeze he used to know. Everything Wade was saying to me made sense and he was right. Sean does not accept who I am now and I don’t know if he ever will. He is so desperate to have his old Breeze back that he cannot see me as I am now,” I told her while holding back my tears. “Wade’s right.”
Helena let out a sigh. “Yes, Wade is right, as much as it pains me to say. Sean does not see past who you once were I fear.” She sat a hand on my back supportively. “Is that what has got you all upset?”
“That, and something else,” I whispered.
“What else, Jules?” she asked, sounding a little uneasy.
“Wade, he kissed me.” The words came out so fast and at such a low sound I wouldn’t have been at all surprised if she did not understand what I said.
The sharp intake of breath from her told me that she did in fact hear though. She took her hand off my back and crossed her arms across her chest. Watching her out of the corner of my eyes, I saw her expression sour.
“He did what?” she snapped. “I could knock some common sense into that boy. Just because Sean is not being a great boyfriend right now...just because...that does not give him a reason to kiss someone that is in a relationship.”
“I know, I know, that’s what I thought after the fact.”
“What did you do? Did you slap him?”
