"I'M THE WHAT." I shouted at Harry. He winced, rubbing his ear. "You're the new head of the Investigation Department." My mouth was pretty much touching the ground. "HARRY! That...that position is too big of an offer, I can't take that. That's asking too much of Kingsley. I would've been fine with anything under that. Even the lowest job, I would've-"
Harry cut me off by putting his hand over my mouth and saying, "Laure, they needed someone for the job and no one else is has the qualifications that you do!" I sighed and ran a hand through my hair. "I want the job, I just don't know how my employees will feel about a seventeen-year-old getting a job better than all of theirs' immediately."
My brother stared at me incredulously. "You're Laurel Collins! You don't get a damn about what other people think. So why are you starting to care now?" I stopped shifting through clothes in my wardrobe and turned to Harry. He's right. Why am I starting to care now? I smiled at Harry and gave him a bear hug. "You're right. Thanks, Harry."
I didn't need to look up to see that he was smirking smugly. "I know, I usually am." As I turned back to my clothes, I threw him a mock scowl. Owl screeching suddenly rang overhead and I dashed to the window. I opened it just in time for a black screech owl to swoop in.
Harry untied the official-looking letter and handed it to me. "What's it say?" he grinned. I wet my lips and opened the parchment. My eyes scanned it and I looked up at Harry with a smile. "It talks about my job description and a bunch of other stuff."
Harry grabbed my hand and pulled me all the way downstairs. I stood in the living room and saw Eva sitting on a couch with a 'Welcome Home!' sign. It occurred to me that our parents' plane was arriving today. "Who's going to pick them up?" I frowned, sitting next to Eva.
"They're taking a shuttle." A few minutes later, the doorbell rang and we all jumped up. Harry threw the door open and grinned. "Welcome home!" Our parents came tumbling in with their suitcases and other junk, looking tired, but happy.
We threw the stuff on the floor and engulfed them in a huge hug. "We missed you three so much!" Mom croaked, on the verge of tears. When we parted, Dad yelled, "Who wants pizza?" We all dashed to the kitchen and started to scarf down the food, sharing stories and laughing. Somehow, we all ended up sprawled on all the couches watching random movies on HBO and eating ice cream from giant tubs.
My head was cushioned underneath Harry's stomach with a tub of chocolate chip cookie dough next to my shoulder. Eva laid in between our parents, who were fast asleep. It felt nice to do something normal for once. My eyes fluttered shut and a certain pair of blue eyes appeared along with the words, "I refuse to lose you, Laure. Not again. I will find you even if it kills me."
My eyes shot open and I looked around, panicking. I blinked a few times and saw my family sleeping on the couches with melted ice cream tubs. A small smile crossed my face. I got up quietly and padded to my room. Today was the day. I dressed in a pale blue blouse, a black skirt, and black ankle boots. My hair was in a messy, curly ponytail to give my look a bit of youth.
When I came downstairs, all my family members were up and moving. Dad was cooking us breakfast while Mom sipped coffee at the table, a newspaper in hand. Eva and Harry were no where to be seen. "Hey, where's Eva and Harry?' I asked, plucking a piece of bacon off a plate set for me.
Dad shoveled some eggs on my plate and replied, "Harry's getting ready for work and Eva's getting ready to help out at Hogwarts." I nodded and stuffed the eggs in my mouth. Harry had mentioned getting a job as an Auror with Ron. Hermione was working in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures.
