"This is so much fun!" I exclaimed.
It was a lot of fun, but I felt like Charm would throw me off or I would fall of any moment. No matter how many times Heather told me to relax, I couldn't do it. My whole body stayed tense.
"I know," Heather agreed. "That's why I love riding horses. It feels like you're free."
"Do you own these two horses?" I asked, slowing down from a trot to a walk. Heather did the same.
Heather nodded. "I own them, wash them, feed them, everything. Well, I only do that when I feel like it. Which is pretty much every day. There are people that can do it for you at my stable, though."
"That's cool. Can we go a little faster?"
"Sure. Just remember to squeeze with your legs to go faster, and pull on the reins slightly if you want to slow down or stop. Don't go into a gallop, though. Your horse, Charm, might not be able to handle it, and you probably won't be able to handle it. I'm in the middle of training Charm. I've already trained Aristocrat, my horse, a lot."
I gently squeezed with my legs and Charm sped up into a trot. I squeezed a little harder and we were cantering.
I loved the way the wind rushed past me, pulling my hair behind me.
I loved the way Charm's movements felt steady and rhythmic beneath me, almost like a lullaby.
I loved the way the trees moved past me in a blur.
It felt felt like I was flying through the trees.
I have to do this more, I realized.
I relaxed and closed my eyes for a moment, then opened them again. I didn't want to run Charm into a tree or a ditch.
"Do you like it?!" Heather shouted over the rush of the wind, ruining my moment.
"I love it!" I shouted back.
We cantered for about two more minutes, then I slowed down to a trot.
                              "That's hard!" I panted.
Heather grinned at me. "Imagine what it's like for the horses. By the way, do you like riding? Riding in general, not just cantering. Are you okay? You finally relaxed."
I smiled back at Heather. "I looooove it. Thanks for teaching me the basics. And yeah, I finally relaxed. It's so fun when you're not worried! I can't say thank you enough. I hope we can ride together more."
"You're welcome. How about I give you 30 minute lessons every week?"
My eyes glowed. "I would love that! How much would they cost?"
Heather stopped smiling, took out some lip gloss, and applied it on her lips before answering. "Since you're one my my best friends, it could be free."
"No, it's fine, I can p-" I argued, but Heather interrupted me.
"It's not every day you get to spend time with horses and your best friend," she said seriously.
I giggled. "That's why we're only doing it once every week!"
Heather smiled. "That sounded soooo wrong! Omigod Destiny!"
I pretended to act offended. "Hey! You're offending meh!"
Heather's smile gave way to a girly giggle. "I know..." She pouted. "We have to get back to my stable. Your horse is getting tired. Let's just start with a canter, then, if they're getting tired, a trot, and then a walk."
I sighed and looked down at Charm. His dark coat was covered with a thin film of sweat.
                              "You're right. Let's go."
We started at a canter again, but it was really bouncy. It was bouncy before, but it seems a lot more bouncy when you're exhausted. It took a lot of effort to keep my back straight and remembered everything Heather told me.
"Move your hands down." Heather had said.
"Don't dig your heels into Charm like that."
"You won't get anywhere if you're barely touching Charm's sides."
                              "Keep your back straight."
"Let's just canter for a couple more minutes. I'm sure you can handle it."
"When you trot, don't slouch your back. You should always keep your back somewhat straight."
"Bend your back a little. It shouldn't be ramrod-straight like that."
When we finally got back to the stables, I was thoroughly exhausted. I did notice that my riding had improved since we started the trail ride, though. I really liked Charm. Even though he was a little green, I could still work with him just fine.
Heather and I had worked out a schedule for my riding lessons. They would be every Wednesday.
I was sweating a lot. I didn't usually sweat at all, so this was new. Heather, however, seemed like she could run for miles straight.
After Heather taught me how to untack and groom the horses, I said suddenly, "I've got to go. I don't want Jason to let Lily kill her butterfly."
Heather made a face and started leading me to her car. "She has a butterfly?"
"No. She's doing something called the Butterfly Challenge. Basically, if you want to cut yourself, draw a butterfly on your wrist instead. Some people name the butterfly to get attached to it. You can't wash it off, it has to fade naturally. If you cut, your butterfly dies," I explained.
                              "Oh..."

When I got home, I rushed into the house and into my kitchen. Riding made me so hungry.
I quickly finished a bar and took a few gulps of water. Then I remembered that Jason was supposed to be watching my sister.
I ran into my sister's room and spit out all of the water in my mouth.
On the bed, Jason was liplocked with my sister. She could have easily broken away.
It was obvious that she was enjoying it.
It was obvious that they both were enjoying it.
