(A week later)

If I get-" I started. I was playing a Hunger Games with Mitch and Jerome.

My phone rang, interrupting my sentence. I looked at the number, but I didn't recognize it.

"Sorry guys, I have to take this," I muttered. I took off my headphones, turned off my mic, and answered the call.

"Who is this?" I asked.

"This is Charlaina, Alia's best friend," someone said hurriedly.

"Okay?"

"Turns out I'm best friends with Heather too."

"Okay?"

"Alia gave me your number."

I was silent.

"Listen, Heather was training a horse. It totally flipped out and refused a jump, and Heather got hurdled over the jump. She's in the hospital with a broken arm now."

"Shit, shit, shit. Is she okay?! Is she in a coma or something?"

"She's fine. She's awake."

"Can you bring me to her?!"

"I'm outside your house. Come on."

I burst into Heather's hospital room, Charlaina close behind.

"Charlie!" Heather cried.

I looked at Charlaina, confused. Who was Charlie? Is there something wrong with Heather?

Seeing my confused look, Charlaina explained, "It's my nickname. Everyone calls me that."

"Oh."

Then I rushed over to Heather and gave her a big awkward hug, trying to avoid touching Heather's cast.

"I'm surprised to see you here," Heather murmured. "Charlie told me you were coming, but I still didn't think you would show."

"Of course I would show! I've only known you for a little bit, but you're one of my best friends!" I exclaimed, breaking out of the hug. "How are you?"

"I've been better," Heather admitted. "Though one time I broke my leg. That sucked. When I got here, I started getting a high fever. It got better, of course, but it was still pretty bad. I've been here for a week now. It took the doctors forever to find Charlie, who I live with. I mean, aren't they supposed to know these things?!"

A monitor in the room beeped loudly.

"Shut the fuck up!" Heather yelled at it. It beeped again, louder, like it was trying to say "you can't control me!"

"Ooh, feisty!" Charlie said, her eyes gleaming. It beeped faintly, then was silent.

Just then, a nurse came into the room.

"Keep your voices down!" She scolded. I ducked my head, Heather pretended to be asleep, and Charlie muttered, "Sorry," not sounding sorry at all.

The nurse glared at us for one last second, then scurried out of the room.

We whispered until Heather really did fall asleep. Soon after, I followed Heather into the realm of dreams, quickly joined by Charlie.
