You left me.
You said that we would stay together and live.
And then you left me.
How could you?
I trusted you!
And you not only broke my trust but my heart.
"Bethie!" I sob, grabbing fistfuls of her shirt. "You can't leave me! You promised."
"Andrew." Maggie reached out to me.
"No!" I scream at her. "You left me! You don't get to comfort me!"
Maggie's hand darts back away from me, looking at me with sad and broken eyes.
"I didn't-" Maggie pulls away from me. "Please..."
"You left me like Mama. Like Papa. Like Amy... Like Andrea." I sob. "You left me!"
Carl places a hand on my shoulder and I turn around, burying my face into his flannel.
"She's gone." I sob. "She promised that she wouldn't leave me. Everybody is leaving me! I can't love anybody anymore because they will leave me! Please, Carl.... Don't leave me."
"I'm not leaving you." He assures me. "I promise."
"Don't make promises that you can't keep." I mumble into his shirt. "Bethie said that she wouldn't leave me."
All I wanted to do was dive into Maggie's arms and have her hold me. But I was angry.
But I also didn't know how much longer I could stay angry. I just wanted her to comfort me. I was the only one she had other than Glenn.
"I've missed you so much, Andrew." Glenn tells me.
"Well..." I fold my arms. "It was your fault that you left."
"Buddy, I love you so much and I'm sorry that we had to go." Glenn reaches out to touch me but drops his hand.
"Andrew." Abraham gathers my attention. "I need to talk to you."
He walks forward and kneels right next to me. "It's my fault that we took your parents away. If we had known that it would affect you both so much, we would have thought twice. Don't be angry at your parents. Be angry at me. It's not their fault. It's mine."
I fall apart right on the spot, blubbering and snotty nose and everything.
"I'm-a-so-sorry!" I sputter between large gulps of breath. I turn and run towards Maggie and Glenn, unable to keep away from them any longer. "Don't-leave-me-too!"
Glenn catches me when I jump onto him and he smushes me in a hug, Maggie's arms wrapping around me from the back.
Maggie peppers my face with kisses as she tries to stop herself from crying. She fails through as fat tears slide down her cheeks.
And for a split second, just a tiny moment, I felt safe. I felt at home. I felt loved and happy.
