I was nervous. Maggie and Glenn had sat me down in the living room whilst the others were out.
"Andrew, we need to talk to you." Glenn starts.
"Am I in trouble?" I swallow, sucking up the saliva that pools from my mouth.
"No, no." Glenn shakes his head.
"In fact, we want to tell you something." They had large smiles on their faces.
"I'm pregnant." Maggie grins.
My gut sinks.
They were replacing me.
"What do you think, little man? You're gonna be a brother." Glenn grins.
"Great." I give them a tiny fake smile. "I'm gonna go and get some sun."
Glenn wraps his arm around Maggie as they wave goodbye to me.
I dart out of the house as fast as I can, leaving my coat and shoes by the door.
"Kid?" Daryl calls after me.
Hot tears stream down my face as I turn.
I trip over a curb and I land in the road, tumbling and skinning my knees.
I was too angry to care.
"Andrew,"
I look up at Daryl with tears.
"Jeez kid. What happened?" Daryl reached down and pulled me to my feet.
"They don't like me anymore." I cry.
"Who?" Daryl crouches onto his knees.
"Ma and Daddy. Ma's having a baby." I sniffle.
"Kid, they ain't replacing you." Daryl reaches out to place a hand on my shoulder. "I promise."
"I'm ugly so now they want a new one!" I tug at my hair, pulling at my bandages.
"Hey, don't. You'll hurt yourself." Daryl grabs my hands to stop me from hurting myself.
I eventually stop resisting and go slack in Daryl's arms, sobbing.
"They ain't replaying ya, kid." Daryl assures me. "Hey. I got something for ya."
I let Daryl pick me up, I smush my face into his shirt as I hiccup.
He takes me back to the empty house. Maggie and Glenn had left. I was supposed to be at school.
I wasn't going back to school.
Daryl sets me on the counter top, getting me a glass of water before leaving.
I down the drink, some of it dribbling out the side of my mouth whilst I await for Daryl to return.
He returns with a piece of fabric in his hands.
"I found this for you." He tells me.
It was a long strip of cloth, stitched into a tube shape.
"What's it for?" I reach out to touch it.
Daryl reaches out and around my head to the safety pin that secured the bandages to my face. He undoes it and lets the bandages fall.
I reach a hand up to cover my wound but Daryl catches my hand, pushing it down.
He pulls the tube of fabric over my head and pulls it down until it rests around my nose.
It covers the bottom half of my face, hiding the wound. It was soft, not scratchy and itchy like my bandages.
