Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.
The same constant and frequent pattern sounded over and over again in my head. My eyes were shut but I squeezed them tighter trying to escape, I felt like a bug under a microscope. There was a light knock on the door before the creaking of it opened, I kept my eyes closed to listen to whoever was coming in.
"I'm just checking on her now." A sweet and soft yet low voice spoke and I immediately knew who it was. "She's still out but the doctors said she will be coming round soon."
As Shawn spoke I felt one of his hands run along my cheek and then pushing some strands back behind my ear, his hand gently brushing back down my jawline and lingering possibly longer than it should.
"What? Yes I'm still here i erm I just got distracted, sorry." He started fumbling his words into the phone and I stopped myself from smiling too much for him to notice.
"I don't know Mum, she doesn't know about her Mum yet."
Wait what? As soon as he said that I felt awake inside even though my arms and legs felt like heavy weights that I couldn't move. I waited until he had finished his phone call and then I waited again just so it wouldn't look suspicious waking up immediately after.
I blinked my eyes a couple of times adjusting to the bright lights in my room before letting out a loud sigh into the air.
"Your awake." Shawn smiled gently making his way over to the bed.
"How long have I been here?" I asked raising my body weight onto my forearms and elbows. "A couple of hours since you came in, do you remember much?" Shawn took a seat on the edge of my bed resting an arm across my legs to prop himself up.
"Just you saying you'd carried your sister to bed." I smiled and rubbed my eyes from the sleepiness. "But yes I know why I'm here. You haven't been here the whole time have you?" I asked my eyes connecting with his. Shawn made a weak smile and looked down before looking back at me.
"Shawn, you didn't have-"
"I wanted to." He cut me off.
We both looked at each other in silence, a comforting silence. A smile crept across his plump lips and his eyes travelled to mine pressed together, I looked around the room to change whatever subject we were on.
"Oh my god." I said looking round the room.
"What?" Shawn said seriously placing a hand on my knee and leaning in slightly.
"I'm in a private room. This is a private room."
Shawn looked at me as if I were stupid.
"These things cost money. A lot."
"Yeah?" Shawn asked.
"I know my mom didn't pay for this, she always pressed to share whenever we were admitted. So if it's not her..." I looked right into Shawn's eyes and he was already looking into my emerald green ones. "It's you."
"Listen." Shawn began.
"Shawn no I can't stay in here, we hardly know each other, we're technically strangers and your paying for a private room for some girl you just met a couple of hours ago?" I gestured with my hands and finally let them flip onto my lap palms facing up. Shawn looked at me with a non tooth smile before breathing out and quickly grabbing my hands.
"I saw what that piece of shit did to you, I wasn't letting you sleep like a sitting duck alone." He readjusted his seat a little closer, his grip on my hand becoming tighter. "i asked for this room and I stayed in here because I'm not giving that psychotic person a way to get in. And your not just some girl Clara, you didn't deserve this." He paused. "Any of this." He said slightly quieter but I still heard him.
"What do you mean?" I said worriedly. "Did something happen to another dancer?" My eyes dancing from his features looking for a sign he was going to speak. I took a moment to breath when it hit me. "Shawn. Where's my mom?" He looked away from me now, straight to the floor and his grip on my hands tightened.
He looked up at me with sad and watery eyes. "Clara. They-"
"They what?" I asked hurriedly.
Shawn looked away from me again.
I couldn't wait for him, I threw the bed sheet from off my body revealing my fragile frame under a hospital gown with blue patterns. Before Shawn could say anything I was out the room and my head turned from side to side looking for a nurse. I started walking along a corridor searching in every window. That's when I saw it. Two males in matching jackets and pants were wheeling a bed out the back door, a black bag resting on top with an informative sheet and name tag. Amelia Reynolds. My mom.
"No!" I screamed and everyone's head shot round to look at the girl in the gown, pale as the colour white with all the light sucked out of her. I tried to run for my mom but a pair of large hands had grabbed my arms and were pulling me back into their body. Their arms wrapping round my body containing all my anger. My cries could be heard echoing throughout the hospital. My mom was dead.
