Chapter 42

"That was a lovely meal Clara, thank you having us over, Shawn." Karen thanked us as we sat around Shawn's dining table.
We'd come up with the perfect plan to tell them about our pregnancy.

"We'd love to stay longer but Aaliyah has school tomorrow." Manny rubbed Liyah's head and she gently smacked it away.

"We just have one more thing to tell you." Shawn said rubbing my thigh underneath the table.

"Oh god." Karen sighed sitting back into her chair. "What have you broken?"

"Actually, nothing." Shawn chuckled and I could tell he was getting nervous. "Clara and I need to tell you something."
Shawn looked at me and we both smiled reassuringly at one another.

I looked back across to the Mendes family, each one hanging on our words waiting for us to tell them.

"Were getting married." I smiled and pulled up my hand from underneath the table and for the first time that night I showed them the beautiful engagement ring on my finger.

They all clapped and cheered, whilst Karen also shed a tear before hugging both of us in turn and retreating back to her seat.
"That's amazing!" Karen cried as she composed herself and slipped on her jacket and hanging the small leather strap of her satchel on her shoulder before rising from her seat.

I squeezed Shawn's thigh from under the table to urge him to say the next surprise. He looked at me with furrowed eyebrows and I widened my eyes at him and he soon caught on as he hastily turned is head back towards his mother and father.

"Oh yeah." Shawn said standing up. He placed his large hands on the table, his swallow tattoo illuminating from the hanging lights above us and his new tattoo still healing from this afternoon. He looked down at me smiling and held out his hand, I slipped mine into his and he pulled me into his chest. His arm came round my back and his other hand was gently placed onto my stomach. "The wedding will be soon because we're having a baby to."

A loud roar of applause and cheers erupted in Shawn's condo and travelled through the open doors into other rooms and outside onto the patio.
"I'm going to be a grandmother!"
"I'm going to be a grandad!"
"I'm going to be an auntie!"

"Your mother would be so proud of you." Karen whispered as she creased out any wrinkles at the front of my wedding dress. "I just know she's looking down on you today in complete awe."

"Thank you Karen." I smiled and we lightly hugged not wanting to ruin my dress or makeup. "And thank you for being there for me."

"I know I could never replace your Mum; I don't want to. But I want you to think of me as your mother, I'll always be here for you dear."

"Thank you."

The music started to play and I took a deep breath before facing the double doors that once were opened, my new life would begin as Clara April Mendes.
They gently opened and time seemed to move in slow motion as I raised my head and immediately met eyes with Shawn. He looked so beautiful in his suit and tie, his smile was my favourite asset though as I walked arm in arm with Manny, who insisted he gave me away. I didn't have any family, the Mendes' were my new family.
My hair hung in a low bun at the back of my head, a long lace veil cascading down the back of my dress and along the floor.
My dress was slim fitted, with a long train that followed behind softly grazing the floor as I neared the alter. The softly silky like material felt like a second skin as it clung to my body. Edging the dress was a beautiful lace design, starting at the v neck of my dress and running up to sit on the edge of my shoulders before going down my sides leaving an open back, before it met just above my bum.

Manny and I reached the alter, he lightly raised my hand and gently kissed it before taking Shawn's hand and placing mine in his. Shawn and I stared lovingly at one another, we hadn't seen each other all morning and for a few months that's the longest we've been away from each other.
He gently placed a kiss on my forehead before we turned forward to listen to the Priest.
I held Shawn's hand tightly in mine, squishing it like a sandwich as I held it in my lap, his thumb stroking on my soft skin comforting me.
As Shawn and I read our vows we both started to become emotional, a few tears slipping out our eyes and earning quiet 'awes' from the guests.
"I promise to love you, care for you and protect you until my last breath. Through sickness and health, through fortune and loss, through dark and light." Shawn softly said, his voice cracking lightly as he finished.
I raised my hand to his cheek and wiped away his tears, his eyes closing at my touch and leaning his head into my hand as I caressed his skin.
"Do you, Mr Shawn Peter Raul Mendes take Miss Clara April Reynolds to be your lawfully wedded wife?"
Shawn shed another tear as he smiled down at me, holding both my hands.
"I do." He proudly said.
"And do you, Miss Clara April Reynolds take Mr Shawn Peter Raul Mendes to be your lawfully wedded husband?"
"I do." I said without a moments hesitation.

"Ladies and gentlemen, for the first time I give you Mr and Mrs Shawn Mendes. Mr Mendes, you may kiss the bride."

This was it, this was my new life as Shawn Mendes' wife. We were going to have a family, I had a family to love and cherish until my dying breath.

And it was all sealed with a kiss.
