I gripped the bed sheets in my hand, my eyes staring out the window watching the leaves fall as the wind brushed them from their branches.
"Do you want a glass of water?"
Shawn had brought me back to his house when they released me from the hospital, a week later. I wasn't old enough to live alone, I begged to go home but they wouldn't let me and I didn't want to go to a care home. I just wanted my mom. Shawn had kept coming into the guest bedroom he has in his condo, every couple of minutes he will either come in or I can hear him outside the door. I think he's scared I'm going to do something.
"Clara." Shawn softly said touching my hip bone underneath the duvet. "Do you want a drink?" He repeated his question and I squeezed my eyes shut tight before opening them. My back was facing Shawn and I didn't want to face him. I lightly shook my head in the pillow, digging myself a while to sink into.
"How about you get up out of bed, you can chill on the couch or take a walk outside." His hand was still resting on my waist and his thumb was gently rubbing for a sense of comfort. I shook my head again and closed my eyes, Shawn's soft touch left and I heard the door quietly close. I rolled over to face the other side and I saw the alarm clock on the table. 4:50.
I decided I would take a shower, I got up from the bed and made my way to the en suite bathroom which was all lightly coloured of a duck egg blue. Shawn was a muscly man but he had taste as paintings hung on the wall and small plant ornaments sat saintly on the window sill. I removed my clothes and stepped into the hot shower, the pressure strong, just how I liked them.
I must had spent an hour and a half in the shower, trying to wash away all the troubles I had. As I came out wrapped in my towel, Shawn was placing a tray of food and drink down on the dressing table with a note.
"Sorry, I thought you'd be a little longer." He smiled letting go of the tray and putting one hand in his jean pocket.
"It's fine." Was all I could manage to say.
"I just thought you'd probably be hungry and want a drink but I don't want to pressure you into coming down, even though you should." He smiled again and leant against the four post bed frame he had let me stay in.
"thank you...for the food." I said fumbling with my fingers. Shawn nodded his head up as a reply and I avoided his eye contact.
"Why are you doing that?" He questioned with a smirk on his face.
"Doing what?" I replied confused.
"Avoiding my eye contact with you." He smiled and crossed his arms adding a bit of sass to his question which caused a smile to creep on my face. It felt good to smile.
"I'm not." I replied whilst opening a drawer for some clothes.
"Your Doing it now." He laughed and I heard him walk up to me and I soon saw his big feet next to mine. I looked up to him and he was looking straight into my eyes.
"Why do you keep doing that?" I questioned mimicking his earlier remark.
"Doing what?" Shawn smiled.
"Wanting to make eye contact." I asked.
It felt like a staring contest for a moment as neither one of us blinked and the house fell silent.
"Because their beautiful. Your beautiful."
Those words caused my heart to beat faster than it ever had before, my cheeks flushed red and my eyes went wide.
"I need to get dressed." I said closing the drawer and putting the oversized shirt down on the bed, it was Shawn's as I had no clothes here.
Shawn put his hands up and started backing up to the door before slowly closing it and looking at me. The door finally closed and I took my hair down from the towel and changed into the shirt with a bralette and underwear underneath.
