"Thanks Hobi for helping out today! We really needed extra hands here at the volunteering center." Wendy, one of my fellow volunteer workers, said as she carried a box back to the center.
"No problem! If y'all need any help, I'm always free!" I said with a smile.
We said our goodbyes, and I headed to the bus stop. I sat there with my hands buried deep in my pockets, clutching onto the heat pack.
Another year has gone by, and it's already December. Where has the time gone? Has it already been a year since I started volunteering? Wow. Time does go by in the blink of an eye.
From orphans to the elderly, I've been doing a ton of volunteer work. Something clicked in me, saying that I should give back to the community. It warms my heart seeing the happiness spread across people's faces. Knowing that you helped someone feels amazing.
A honk interrupted my thoughts. The giant, silver bus stopped in front of me. I hopped onto the bus, found a seat, and made my way home. Maybe next year I can buy myself a car, instead of taking the bus everyday. Another year will go by soon. Hopefully.
I look out the window as the snow trickles down from the sky. I always thought there was beauty in the snow. It's surreal.
~~~~~
"I love it so much! Thank you Hobi-hyung!" The bright, young boy ran up to me, holding onto his toy robot. "You're welcome Taejoon," I said as I engulfed him into a hug. He pulled away, and ran back to his friends, showing them the gift he just received.
I sat there watching the little kids open up their presents, and eat their meals. Seeing the smiles on their faces melts my heart. That's the beauty of volunteering. But somehow, I still feel like something is missing.
"Promise you'll wait for me Hoseok." Her words echoed in my head. It's been a year since she left me, yet I'm still waiting for her. There's something wrong with me.
I let out an deep sigh, and rested my head on my palm. I miss her so much. We'd be spending Christmas together right now if she didn't leave.
"Hobi-oppa?" A small, sweet voice turned me away from my thoughts.
"Yes, Jiyeon?" I questioned the little angel in front of me. "Why do you look so sad? It's Chwistmas!" I beamed at how cute her lisp was. Jiyeon was clutching onto the stuffed puppy she received from one of the volunteers.
"Oppa isn't sad! Oppa is just hungry! This is my hungry face," I pulled a funny face, and a giggle emerges from the five year old. She gasps, hold up a finger, and runs away, dragging her stuffed puppy. I raised my brow in confusion. Did I scare her? Oops.
Suddenly, a grin crept onto my face. "Here oppa! You look like you need a cup of hot cocoa to cheer you up!" Jiyeon looked up at me with her big, brown eyes as she held up the cup of cocoa with the help of Irene. "I wondered why she asked for another one," Irene chuckled.
I took a sip of the cocoa, and let out an exaggerated breath of relief. I jumped up with my chest puffed out. "Hobi-oppa needed that cocoa Jiyeon. Look how strong I am!" I lifted, and twirled her around as amused squeals escapes her mouth.
If I could, I would adopt Taejoon and Jiyeon. But because of how much I make, I can barely feed myself, let alone take care of two children. They're doing well here at the orphanage. They're being taken care of, and that's all that matters.
~~~~~~~
After an hour of cleaning up the mess hall, it was finally time to go home.Before I headed out of the orphanage, I put on my padded jacket and my hat. Though I love the winter, it can be a pain to keep warm at times like this, but it would all be worth it once I head back home. As I open the door, the sound of tiny footsteps followed me. Looking back, I see Taejoon and Jiyeon running towards me. I chuckles and shake my head. 'Aigoo, these kids are too much.' I think to myself.
"Hobi-hyung/oppa!" They both say in unison as they stopped in front of me.
"Yes?" I ask sweetly.
Both of them give a thumbs up and toothy grins. "Fighting!"
I tilt my head, giving them a confused expression. "What do you mean?" Instead of giving me an answer, they giggle to each other, and push me out to the cold weather.
"Just go enjoy Chwistmas, Oppa!" Jiyeon says.
"Yeah! I'll watch over Jiyeon-ah while you're gone, hyung!" Taejoon replies back.
I give them both an uneasy look. "What are you guys up to?"
All of a sudden, Irene walks up to us, and holds unto the kids' shoulders. "Alright you two. That's enough. Hobi needs to go now." Taejoon and Jiyeon looked up at her and nodded. They waved goodbye, and ran back to the other children. She gives him a warm smile. "Merry Christmas, Hoseok-ah."
"Merry Christmas to you too, Irene." I say in a cheery tone.
~~~~~~~~~
Before I knew it, I was off into the winter wonderland of Seoul. The sight of all the lights that hung across the shops was breathtaking. Each of the telephone poles were hung with garlands. As usual, the snow kept on falling from the grey sky.
People all around were bustling from left and right to go see their loved ones. Some are trying to buy a present at the last minute, whilst others were in rush to go to a holiday party. I could hear children whining to their parents on wanting a toy they saw in a store before, while others cheered with joy.
If only she was here to make see this. This moment would be twice as beautiful than it already is.
I roamed around a little longer, and ended up at a nearby park. It was just as beautiful as the city. Lights were hung everywhere, snow covered the streets and trees, and people merrily walking around. A sudden breeze blew past which made me bury my hands deeper into my pocket. I could really go for another cup of hot cocoa right now. Luckily for me, I spotted one near the giant tree which was at the center of the park.
I handed the cashier a five dollar bill, and told them to keep the change. Not having a few coins wouldn't hurt. I walked up to the tree to have a better view of it's beauty, but something else caught my eye.
I nearly dropped my cup of hot cocoa at the sight. I think I'm dreaming. It couldn't be, right? I ran as fast as I could to make sure it was all real.
"Y/N," I breathed out. "You're really here!" I beamed as I picked her up and spun her around. I can't believe she's really here!
"I told you to wait for me, and you really did." Y/N smiled.
"Of course, I did. You have no idea how long I've been waiting to do this." Before Y/N could finish her sentence, I crashed my lips onto hers. Y/N didn't hesitate to kiss back.
This moment feels so right. I'm glad she's back in my arms.
"Eww!" Two, familiar voices squealed in disgust. Y/N and I pulled away to see Jiyeon on Irene's waist, and Taejoon holding on to Irene's hand. "Their puppy dog eyes got to me," Irene chuckled. Y/N and I ran up to them, and engulfed them into a hug.
Who would've thought my day would end like this?
It's perfect.
