Trigger Warning
"Close your eyes, and count to ten. Don't open them."
That was the beginning to Jung Hoseok's loneliness.
When his mother left him, Hoseok roamed around the town, looking for her and food. The poor, five year old boy fainted due to hunger, but luckily, a woman who was passing by carried him to a nearby orphanage.
He was so grateful that the woman took care of him when no one didn't, but he was devastated that she couldn't adopt him. Hoseok never understood why.
The boy was rather happy at the orphanage; he was fed, cleaned, and loved. He made a bunch of friends who drove the loneliness away — who drove the pain away. He was happy.
But that all changed when he mentioned his special friend one day to the children at the orphanage."Mang? The dancing horse?"
"Yeah! He's so cool! He teaching me how to dance too!"
All of the kids— all of his "friends" laughed and spat at his face him when he mentioned Mang. They all turned away from him. Hoseok was considered the weird kid who could see dancing horses. That was when he felt his loneliness creep back into his life, but he had Mang to rely on.
Mang would never leave him. He sits next to Hoseok at lunch; Mang sleeps next to him in bed; he draws with Hoseok; Mang was Hobi's true best friend.
Even during adoption interviews, Hobi would always tell people that Mang was his best friend who wore a horse mask to hide his real face. There were families who were willing to adopt Hobi, but they didn't want to deal with his imaginary best friend. People thought it was adorable, but as he grew up, they saw it was childish. When he reached the age of ten, he wanted to forget about Mang.
He was so angry at Mang. The boy would yell and throw things at him, and the other kids would look at him like he was crazy. "Screaming at the wall? This guy's got issues."
Hoseok wanted Mang gone, and he left. With a tear stained face and swollen eyes, the boy woke up one day to see that his best friend was gone. He thought that he'd be friends again with the other kids at the orphanage, but they didn't even go near him.At the age of twelve, he overheard a conversation between two of the nuns who were working at the orphanage. "Hoseok is a bright and adorable kid, but Mother Superior is thinking of letting him go as he's getting to old to stay at the orphanage. Families won't adopt him either. I feel bad for the boy."
Their conversation left Hoseok in tears that night. The next morning he ran over to Mother Superior's office, begging her not to let him go. He begged her that he'll do anything to stay. If they kick him out, where will he go?
Despite her tough exterior, Mother Superior had a heart; a heart that hurt when this boy begged to stay. She let him stay, but as a worker.
He helps in the kitchen, he tends to the garden, he cleans up the orphanage, he takes care of the children; any job you offer to Hoseok, he would gladly do it.
One day, a dance teacher came to the orphanage for volunteer dance classes. Hoseok was sweeping the halls when he heard the music coming from the multipurpose room. Sadly, the class ended, but the teacher was still dancing as a treat for the children. He couldn't help but stare at him in awe. Every move mesmerized Hoseok, he was almost drooling. His eyes were filled with fascination and admiration. Something bubbled inside him. He felt like he found his purpose in life. He wanted to be a dancer.
