Trigger Warning

The curious, little girl walked up to the claw machine outside a convenient store. A small, yellow stuffed toy caught her attention.

Next to the little girl was her older brother who had his hands in his pockets, trying to find some loose change. The boy's throat was dry and his stomach was empty. He could feel his mouth water at the sight of instant noodles. Oh how he wanted some so much!

With how much money he had in his pocket, there was no way he could buy at least one bowl. He looked down at the fifty cents in his palm, and sighed dishearteningly. He was a broke fifteen year old.

He turned back to his little sister who was still gawking at the claw machine. A small smile appeared on his face when he spotted the child.

"Do you want it?"

The child nodded excitedly when her older brother asked.

A sigh left his mouth as he came face to face with the machine. He looked back at his sister one more time to see her looking up at him with bright eyes. It melted the boy's heart.

He inserted his quarters into the machine, and aimed to grab the yellow, stuffed toy. Luckily, he did in just one go.

The four year old squealed in delight when her older brother handed the toy to her. All that the boy could think of was what could they eat tonight, but he couldn't help but feel happy as his little sister was happy.

"What are you gonna name it, Haeun-ah?"

"Chimmy."

Jimin smiled from ear to ear when Haeun named the stuffed toy after him. He grabbed her hand, and made their way back home.

After fifteen minutes of walking and chasing after Haeun, they finally made it home. Haeun excitedly ran over to the old lady who was drinking her tea outside of the house.

"Aunty! Look what oppa won for me! I named him Chimmy!"

Aunty just chuckled at Haeun and told her to go inside to eat. She stayed back to talk to Jimin, who scratched the back of his neck.

"Did you two at least eat something earlier?"

"I bought some roasted sweet potatoes for lunch to keep her full. I was gonna buy some instant noodles, but Haeun wanted the toy-"

"So you bought it for her?"

Jimin nodded apprehensively as if he did something wrong.

"You haven't eaten since lunch then. Luckily, I whipped up my spicy beef soup. C'mon, let's eat." Aunty gave Jimin a reassuring smile and led him into the house. They spotted Haeun at the small table in the living room, patiently waiting for the food with Chimmy.

Dinner passed by quickly, and Jimin was stuffed thanks to aunty's soup. He opted to clean the dishes as it was the least he could do since she served them a great meal.

As Jimin was cleaning the dishes, he couldn't help but think back to the time aunty found them.

Two, dirty children in ragged clothing sat on cardboard boxes in the cold with nothing but a thin jacket used as a blanket. Aunty worked at the small restaurant across the street. Jimin remembered how his stomach grumbled whenever food was being served. He remembered looking down at a sleeping Haeun who was huddled up against him, trying to stay warm. That's when aunty walked up to them and brought them into her restaurant to feed them.

Out of curiosity, she asked the boy why they were sitting on the streets. Jimin explained how their parents died in a car accident, and that child services were ready to put them in an orphanage. He overheard one of the workers saying to separate the siblings. Jimin instantly packed up their bags and ran away before they were taken.
