Oh God, I remember this day. Looking at my phone, I was scrolling through pictures of Seokjin and I. I giggle to myself at the memories of when both of us were young and free. Despite him having a tight schedule at work, he always managed to have time for me, which I never took for granted.
However, as time flew by, things grew complicated.
Seokjin enlisted into the military last year. I hated the fact that he had to leave not only me behind, but those around him for two years. Two years without hearing his windshield wiper laughter, dad jokes, and narcissistic answers. Two years without Jin.
I get the chance to chat with him online at least once a month, but that rarely happens now.
"Y/N dear?" A voice chirped in which snapped me back to reality.
"H-huh?" I faced the person, and realized grandma was the one talking to me. "Oh... I'm sorry, Nana. What did you say?"
She sighed, and shook her head. "You seem troubled, sweetie. What's wrong?"
I pursed my lips, and looked down. I was too embarrass to answer. "It's obvious enough." I reply. Grandma nodded, understanding what I meant. When she first saw Jin in person, she knew he was the one for me. And I never doubted her judgement.
She tucked a strand of her white hair behind her ear, and sighed. "You know," she said breaking the silence. "I was in your shoes before."
"What do you mean?" I asked, confused.
She continued on with her story. "Your grandfather entered the military when he was in his early twenties. A tall and handsome man your grandpa was. I was lucky enough to even marry a man like him. But as soon as the war started, everything changed. I sent him a bunch of letters, asking if he was doing alright, and such. At the end of the month or so, I'd receive a bundle of responses from him. We went on like this for a couple of months, but all of a sudden, he stopped responding. It became difficult for him to send back letters." She stared out to the ocean, and had a look of nostalgia on her face.
I shifted around, eager to listen for more. It must have been terrible to wait for a sign that long. "How did you cope with the loneliness?"
She turns to me, and smiles warmly. "I would walk around the sandy shoreline and talk to the ocean."
I furrow my brow in confusion, trying to make sense of what she said. "You talked to the ocean?"
She giggled, and nodded. "Yes I did. I knew he was on the other end of the ocean, listening to me."
I stared out to the ocean, and wondered if Jin could hear me too. After an hour or so, I decided to walk on the beach.
The sky was a mix of orange and red like the flames of a fire. A cool breeze blew past me, sending shivers down my spine. Every time I took a step, the soft sand crumbled underneath my feet, but the cold, ocean water would wash the sand away.
I stopped in my tracks to face the ocean. The sun looked like it was floating right above the water. I needed to act fast.
"Can you hear me Jin?" I asked the ocean, with hope in my voice.
"First off, I just wanted to say I miss you so much. I know I told you that I could handle living alone, but I lied. I didn't want you to go. I wanted you to stay with me, back at our crappy, old apartment back in the city."
I looked down at my feet, and exhaled. "I hope you're doing okay because I'm not. A year feels like a lifetime to be honest, and you're coming back next year," I chuckled, trying to soothe the burning sensation in my throat. "I just want you home, Jin. Please come back home. I love you."
A tear ran down my face as I look up at the ocean. The sun was nowhere to be seen. All I could see was the darkness. In the darkness, stars shone above me.
Jin would've loved it here. I remember him telling me that we should go to the beach before his enlistment, but that never happened thanks to his tight schedule. A gust of wind interrupted my thoughts. Damn it's cold. Guess I better head back inside.
I entered the house to nothing. Grandma was probably asleep already. I heard noises coming from the kitchen, and I felt scared. Did I lock the door before leaving? Is grandma still awake? Did someone break in? A number of questions ran through my mind as I slowly made my way to the kitchen, grabbing the closest object to me.
"Who are you and why are yo-" I stopped mid-sentence as I saw who it was. Tears started running down my face as I saw Jin standing there eating a sandwich.
"Hi Y/N." Jin said. "Sorry you had to see me like this. I got hungry," he said as he scratched the back of his neck with his free hand.
I ran up to him, and engulfed him into a hug. I covered his face with kisses, and he just chuckles. "I missed you too, babe."
"How did you get here? Why are you home so early?" I questioned.
"I asked if I could come home during the holidays. Luckily, they allowed me to so here I am!" He said cheerfully. I hugged him once more like I was never going to let go.
"Oh, and Y/N," He says. I look up at him, waiting. "I heard you at the beach. And to answer your question, yes I can hear you." He laughed as I lowered my head in embarrassment. He lifted my head with his index finger to make me look at him. "That was cute, baby don't be embarrassed. I'll always be on the other side listening, okay? I love you, Y/N."
"I love you too, Jin." He laid a gentle kiss on my lips. It was something that I longed for, and now I can finally do it can. He pulled away, and leaned his forehead against mine.
"Merry Christmas, Y/N."
