I wake up to the slight breeze of the air. It's a bit cold, but nonetheless refreshing. I can hear the crickets chirping in the distance, and animals passing through bushes. I roll over on my makeshift bed to look at Madi.
She's sleeping soundly, her braids falling over on her face. She looks so peaceful. Her eyelashes flutter a bit because of a braid that's tickling her cheek. Gently I move the braid over so it won't bother her.
I let myself smile, I haven't done that in a while. I have since learned to forgive myself for the many wrongdoings I have committed. There's no point in hating myself when it's only Madi and me here.
Like every morning, I grab the only part of the communications system I could salvage from the wreckage in Allie's lab. I grab my boots and put them on, as well as my jacket. I get out of our rover that we travel in and go little ways away until I find the highest point of the Earth that I can see, and position the satellite dish so it's pointing at the sky. The dish is a little rusted, and it's very small. It's not much, but it's enough to get me out of bed in the morning in hopes that I will meet Bellamy and the others one day.
I let out a sigh. "Here we go again." I turn the coms on and talk into the radio. "Bellamy, if you can hear me, if you're alive, It's been 2,199 days since Praimfaya. I don't know why I still do this every day. Maybe it's my way of staying sane, not forgetting who I am... who I was. It's been safe for you to come down for over a year now. Why haven't you? The bunker's gone silent, too. We tried digging them out for a while, but there was too much rubble. I haven't made contact with them either."
I turn off the radio for a second to take in what I'm saying. They probably died up there. No, there's still hope. But what is hope anymore? Hoping that my friends are still okay when it's has been six years since Praimfaya? I know Octavia and Wonkru have an excuse because they can't open the door with all of the rubble blocking it, if they're even alive still. But Bellamy? Raven? Echo? Monty, Harper, Murphy, Emori? Radio silent. Maybe it's because my com system is too small, which I hope is the case. Maybe there are no more shuttles that will be able to sustain Earth's atmosphere upon reentry? But they would have been building one. That's unlikely too. I just hope everyone is okay.
I turn the radio back on. "Anyway, I still have hope. Tell Raven to aim for the one spot of green and you'll find me. The rest of the planet, from what I've seen, basically sucks so--"
All of a sudden I hear a sonic boom. I look up only to see a space shuttle.
"Nevermind," I speak into the radio. "I see you."
