We were driving slow through the snow on the way to our new house. I sighed as I looked outside. These were the last boxes... Now it was offical... I felt so guilty about all of this. It was my fault we moved, even though mom always said it wasn't. I knew better. I looked up to the stars who shimmered brightly in the sky.
I've always liked looking at the night sky... It made me feel less alone in the world. Because stars are like people... There are milions and bilions of stars. Some close to each other, some far apart... Some shine brighter than others. They are noticed by many. Others are smaller, less bright. Only a trained eye would catch a glimps of them. But for the planets around them, they were the center of life. And I thought that's kinda like how people are...
We were approaching our new house and I closed my eyes.
"Jace, we're here honey" mom said but I didn't react.
"Leave him be Ria" dad sighed.
"Just help me with the last boxes"
I heard the car doors open and close and looked at my side. A little black head popped up to look at me and I smiled a little."We're here Max... We're home..." I said and petted him. Home... I didn't like the feeling of calling this place home. But then again, I lived too much in the past. According to most, that is.
"Come on..."
I opened my door and took the leash of Max.
"Come on boy"
He stood up and jumped into the snow. He really loved the snow. I just rolled my eyes and looked at my dad."Anything I can help with?"
"Yeah, get inside before your mother kills us both" he said.
"You're wearing shorts and not even a jacket! Get out of this snow"
"Yes sir" I laughed and pulled Max along.
"Mom?! Can I help with something?!" I yelled through the house and unleashed Max."Oh Jace, no, just get to bed and get some rest" she said while coming down the stairs.
"We'll go shopping in town tomorrow, want to join or stay here?"
"I'll just stay here" I said and smiled weakly.
"I'll explore a bit on my own this weekend"
"Alright, good night" she said and kissed me on my head before I could head off to my room.My room. It still felt weird to call it that... But I had time to get used to it. It was Friday today so I would've a whole weekend to relax before attending my new school. Pfff... School...
"What do you think Max?" I asked, sighing as I entered the room. He barked happily and I smiled."Bed" I commanded and he laid down on his dog bed at the foot of my own. I left the door open a bit so he could get downstairs if he wanted to go outside in the morning. I just sat down on my bed, staring at the wall across the room. It felt so empty here... Empty without another bed... A silent tear rolled down my cheek and I sighed. Man up Jason. I undressed and went to sleep. A dreamless sleep but sleep nontheless...
...
When I woke up the sun was already shining. My parents were probably already out and left me alone in the house. I sighed and sat up.
"Max!" I called. I heard him running up the stairs and he jumped on my lap.
"Hey bud"
He wiggled his tail and wanted to lick my face but I dodged it.
"I'll get dressed and we'll go for a walk, good bud?"He barked and got of my bed as I stood up. A few minutes later I sat down at the table eating my breakfast, watching Max play in the snow in the garden. A few minutes after that we got outside. I pulled on my winter jacket and a scarf. Because if my mom saw me in my shorts in this weather, she'd kill me for sure. I just walked through our street, careful not to fall on the ice.
"No! Come here Snickers!"
I saw a young girl run after a cat. She was about to run onto the street but didn't saw the car that was approaching.
"Watch out!" I yelled and pulled her back on the sidewalk. We fell into the snow and the car passed. The cat crossed the street without harm but she wouldn't have. That car would've hit her and she would be hurt. Or worse..."Everything alright?" I asked as I pulled her up from the ground. She was just a little girl, she probably had no idea how dangerous a street could be, surely in such a quiet street as this one.
"Snickers!" she yelled after the cat but it disappeared into the bushes seconds later.
"Oh thank God!" I heard another girl yell as she ran up to us. I didn't notice her before. I was probably to focussed on the little one."Suzie are you okay?" she asked the girl.
"Snickers is gone" she said on a sad tone and looked at the ground.
"The cat will come back, you need to get home" the girl said, now with a pissed off voice. She looked at me and sighed.
"Thanks, really, she always chases after that stupid cat..."
"Oh, it's nothing, as long as she's fine right?"
"Yeah, right" she smiled and inspected me."I've never seen you around before... Come here often?"
"N-no, I just moved here" I said and saw Suzie pet Max, laughing.
"Oh so you're the guy that lives in 21 now?"
"Y-yeah... How did you know?"
"Small town, few houses for sale, fewer sold... You'll understand when you've lived here a bit longer" she said like it was nothing."But anyway, my name is Emily and this is my little sister Susanna. We live in 15, a bit down the street"
"I'm Jason, but most call me Jace" I smiled.
"Jace, cool, I like that" she said.
"Which school are you going? Out of town or our own Emelo High School?"
Emelo. I still thought it was the most absurd name to call a village. Like, what was it named after? A person? I hope not. That person must had a terrible life..."The high school in town, I'm in the last year"
"Really? Me to" she laughed.
"It's cold" Suzie complained and pulled on the sleeve of her sister.
"Well, gotta get going. But it was nice to meet you. I'll see ya around"
"Yeah, bye!" I called after here and looked at Max.
"What do you think about her bud? Do you like her?"
He barked and I rolled my eyes. Guess he does...
