'BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!', I heard the strange noise screech in my ear.

I tried to open my eyes to see what was making the racket, but found that I couldn't. Instead, I tried to move my hand, and although I felt stiff, I managed to wriggle my fingers.

'Lauren?', I heard my mother whisper.

I tried to speak, but only a murmur came out.

'Oh Laur!', I heard my mother say, and it sounded like she had been crying.

With that I felt myself drift back into unconsciousness.

It felt like seconds, but it was probably hours, I woke again, and this time I was able to open my eyes.

'Mam?', I managed to croak, when I saw her sitting in a chair at the side of the unfamiliar room I was in.

'Lauren!', she exclaimed, jumping up when she saw me awake, 'Thank God you're awake! We've been so worried!'

'Mam what happened?', I asked, as she hugged me tight, 'Where am I?'

'You're in hospital pet', Mam explained, wiping her tear filled eyes, 'You were in a car accident.'

With that the memory of being in the car, and the bright lights came back to me.

'Finn!', I said, before wincing at the pain from a needle in my arm, 'Mam what about Finn? Is he okay?'

I saw my mother grimace, but before she could say anything else, my father ran into my little hospital room.

'Lauren you're awake!', he smiled, and came over and hugged me.

'How long have I been out?', I asked.

'Just over twenty four hours', Mam replied, 'You were so lucky Laur, it could have been a lot worse.'

After that a doctor came in to examine me. He was really nice, and told me about my injuries. I had broken a few ribs, that were healing nicely, and I also had a few cuts and bruises.

'Thank you doctor', I said, as he left.

He wasn't gone ten minutes when there was a knock on my door.

'That's probably Ryder', Mam told me, 'He's been here since they brought you in.'

'Really?', I asked, stunned.

'Really', Dad said, going over to open the door.

Sure enough, Ryder was standing there.

'Laur!', he beamed, walking in, 'Thank God you're okay!'

'We'll let you two alone for a while', Mam butted in, motioning to my father to follow her out into the hallway.

'So how are you feeling?', Ryder asked, grabbing a chair and sitting down beside my bed.

'Sore', I admitted, 'My chest is painful because of my ribs, and the needles in my arms aren't the nicest things either. I'm not complaining though, because I'm so grateful to be alright.'

'Yeah', Ryder sighed, as I noticed his tear stained cheeks.

'Ryder, have you been crying?', I asked, reaching out to touch his face.

'What? No! No I haven't!', Ryder replied, in a panicked voice.

'Okay, okay relax', I giggled, 'Ryder how's Finn? Was he hurt worse than me? When can I see him?'

Ryder looked at me blankly.

'Uh', he mumbled, 'I'm sure you can see him in a while.'

'Good', I replied, 'I'm gonna tell him the next time, I'll drive.'

Instead of laughing, or even smiling at my attempted joke, Ryder dropped his eyes to the floor.

'Um, Beau called me to ask how you were', Ryder said, 'He seemed pretty worried.'

'Really?', I asked, trying to ignore the small spark of excitement within me.

'Yeah, he said he'd see you in a few days', Ryder replied.

'He's coming home?', I asked, confused, 'He's coming home just to see me?'

Ryder looked at me straight in the eyes.

'Hey', I said, softly, when I saw his eyes fill with tears, 'Why are you crying? What's wrong?'

'I'm not supposed to tell you', Ryder whispered, choking on his tears, 'But you're gonna find out anyway. Beau, and the boys, are coming home to attend a funeral.'

'Oh gosh!', I gasped, 'Is Gina okay?'

'She's fine', Ryder said, tears now streaming down his face, 'It's Finn, he's dead.'
