(A/N: this is based on a true story that took place a while ago today, and I'm the main character. I'll be using usernames and nicknames to respect people's privacy.)
Sixth period
"No, no, no. She cannot possibly change them last minute." The angry mumbling came from the girl sitting near the end of the right-front corner of the classroom. The teacher's dull droning about a graph or another served as a background noise to all the events occurring in her head. The pencil in her hand snapped, and then snapped again as she she broke it down to three pieces of wood with lead in the center. It was satisfying for her because she pictured it as her stupid student counselor. Two pieces for her ribs. One for her neck.
Beside her, the sound of ripping paper was quickly becoming normal as her friend, Ree_Osabi , found it very therapeutic. The expression on her face resembled an angry raccoon with her nose scrunched and her eyebrows glaring at nothing in particular.
Their relationship was a perfect dynamic. EphermalSerendipity (Ren), the Hufflepuff with a heart of gold and a mean streak that goes on for miles, and Ree_Osabi (Ree) , the Slytherin who lives up to house traits without being stereotypical.
Ren turned to her friend with a blank but determined look for on her face. "There is no way in hell am I switching groups with Mallory, she never does anything. Our idea is our idea, none of us are going to execute it with a true member missing."
"We can't tell the others about this, especially Alex. She's going to punch Ms. Springer, and we can't have that. We should talk to Ms. Springer and Ms. Phoenix about this."
"You talk to Ms. Phoenix and I'll talk to Ms. Springer with Red as my moral support."
They nodded to each other and shook hands, pretending to pay attention to their math teacher. Honestly, she could give Professor Binns a run for his money, and he didn't even exist!
Eighth period
One boring math class plus one boring biology class later, it was time for art class, which meant they could all ambush Ms. Springer with innocent eyes and wobbly lips. Before exiting their classroom, Ren heard Casey say, "Ugh, why does she have to switch Mallory of all people? At least we have Ren on our side now." Before she could react, Ree turned to her with a nonchalant expression that also left no room for debate. "Ren's not in your group, and Mallory is not on ours."
"But Ms. Springer sai-"
"We're not letting Ms. Springer switch our groups, especially after last year when Mallory let everyone do the dirty work while she only presented it."
That shut Casey up real quick.
The class of currently sixteen girls filed out in a chaotic manner, not wanting to be late nor wanting to be their either.
The art teacher was truly a mean spirit. How she never got sick from her shouting was truly a miracle. Barely ten feet from the art room, Ms. Springer stood with a notebook in her arms, practically begging to be ambushed by the angered gaggle of girls. They all drifted towards her like moths to a flame, except they were going to do the burning this time. Three girls created a triangle around her, all of them with their own strengths in an argument. Casey, her annoying persistence. Alex, who somehow found out, with her ability to weasel herself into the tightest situations and come out unscathed. Ren, with her arguments shaped into deadly bullets in a shotgun that never misses nor gives a chance for recovery. All of them, however, were armed with innocent expressions that worked on naïve adults who only saw what they wanted to see.Casey started the argument in the easiest way possible. "Miss, it true that you're switching our science fair groups?"
"Yes, I am. It's only for your benefit, girls."
Ren snorted, Your benefit my ass. She decided it was her turn now. "How is it for our benefit? If you didn't want the groups like this, then you should have hand-picked the groups yourself before letting us choose. Maybe next year, Miss. If we're all still here."
Ms. Springer looked truly shocked that these words were coming out of the awkward girl that was a model student in some aspects. God be with her now, it was Alex's turn, and Alex was merciless. "You shouldn't even switch anyone. Ren and Ree are the ones that have the best understanding of the idea, and the roles are all distributed evenly. You switch our groups and none of us will attend the science fair."
Ren decided to step in and dig the grave even deeper. "You claim that many things are for our benefit. If we don't attend, we lose the points. If you truly care for us, you'd keep us as we are and we all attend."
Recovering from her previous shock, Ms. Springer looked at them with a nasty expression on her makeup cake face. She kept saying that she'll see what she can do, even though she had no right to interfere in the grouping. The girls just smiled and went to the art room, momentarily satisfied even with the lingering doubt.
End of the day
"Let's go speak to Ms. Phoenix. Do you have your notebook ready? You have to publish it on Wattpad in your rant book." Ree was truly insistent that Ren publishes the story of this day on her rant book. It didn't take much for Ren to cave. She was planning on doing it anyway. She nodded as she picked up her pink Capitol notebook that was a gift from Ree, and checked her pocket to make sure the pen was with her.
They decided to start the search in the high school section, but they didn't find her. They asked some of the older girls that were on friendly terms with them, but they didn't see her either. They almost gave up for the day, but another girl had spotted her and called out to them so that they can talk with Ms. Phoenix.
As it turned out, Ms. Springer wasn't telling the truth, and Mallory will only be added to their group. There won't be a switch, just an addition. Both girls were relieved by that, and they said goodbye. As they left to claim some of the empty seats, Ren's name was called, which meant she had to leave.
She turned around and waved goodbye to all her friends, thinking of the short story she was going to create with the amazing machine called an IPad.
Ren turned towards the stairs and didn't look back, for once, feeling satisfied after a long day.
THE END (for now)
