AN: These are so cliche but I love them. Also they are obligatory, so don't complain.

Alex cowered while the thunder raged outside. The rain hit the window forcefully, the wind breaking branches off trees outside. It was an awful storm, and Alex could not have hated it more.

He whimpered softly and prayed that John would be late coming back to the dorm. He really didn't want John to see him like this - John wouldn't love someone who was afraid of the lightning. Hell, John probably didn't love him right now, and his irrational fear was just another reason on top of the rest.

To his defeat, the door clicked and swung open, revealing a soaked John carrying a backpack. "Hey, Alex, I'm home. What . . . Alex, are you okay?!"

Alex turned away from him, trying to cover the tears sliding silently down his cheeks. It was hard, though; he was curled against the couch with his knees pressed to his chest and his breathing an absolute mess.

John slid to the ground next to him and pulled Alex into his lap. "Alex, tell me what's wrong? What is it?"

Alex couldn't hold it in any longer. He fell against John's chest and let out the sob he'd been holding in while John rocked him gently.

"Hush, Alex, it's okay, I'm here,"

Alex started to pull himself together. "I'm so sorry, John, I'll go now,"

Alex started to get up, but John pulled him back down. "Don't be sorry, Alex, what on earth happened?"

"Storms remind me of the . . . the hurricane, from when I was young. When I lost my brother,"

John's eyes filled with tears. "Alex, I'm sorry, I wish you'd told me,"

"You don't have to pretend that you care, John, it's fine,"

"What?!"

Alex flinched visibly, but made no response.

"Alex, don't ever talk like that. I am your best friend, and I will always care about you. I want you to be happy, so what will help you? I'll do anything,"

Alex gulped. "I wish you weren't my friend,"

John felt his heart break a little and he loosened his grip. "Why not? Did I yell? I'm sorry, I didn't mean it, please,"

"You should be my boyfriend instead,"

John stared blankly ahead for a long moment, then lifted Alex onto the couch. Alex shut his eyes and waited for the abuse, for the slurs and the punches that he was expecting. What happened next he never considered.

John pressed his lips to Alexander's and kissed him sweetly. Alex kissed back, wrapping his arms around  John's neck and pulling him closer.

John pulled away and looked down at him. "As your boyfriend, I care about you. Please don't think different,"

Alex sat up, wiping the tears from his eyes and nodding. "J-John?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

Alex blushed at the name and buried his face in John's neck. John put his arms around the man's waist and turned so he was pulled into his lap again, this time on the couch.

"Alex, is there anything else I can do for you?"

"Can you stay?"

"I'm not going anywhere,"

Another clap of thunder shook the world, and Alex's breathing took back its irregular rate.

"Alex, can you focus on my heartbeat? It'll be okay,"

Alex pressed his head to John's chest and listened closely. There it was - a steady thrum that seemed to continue for Alex only, one that filled his mind until it was just him and John in the universe. Alex almost drifted to sleep, then roused himself to say, "Thank you, John,"

John smiled and pulled Alex closer. "Do you want another kiss before bed?"

Alex leaned back and nodded eagerly. John kissed him, even softer than before, but Alex has having none of it.

His hands slid down to John's hips and he deepened the kiss, pressing close to John. John seemed startled but placed his hands on Alex's shoulders, trying with all his being to get closer. Alex smiled briefly, then bit John's lip. John shuddered and tightened his grip on Alex's shoulders, his nails digging in slightly, then parted his lips.

Alex pulled away, a contented look on his features. John looked downcast for a moment, and then remembered that wasn't his goal in the first place.

"Um," was all John could manage.

"Oh, so you liked that?" Alex smirked.

John put a hand on Alex's chest. "Y-Yeah,"

"Maybe we can do it again, tomorrow."

Alex laid back down on John and fell asleep, the storm no longer the first of his thoughts.

AN: Today's shoutout goes to bisexuals/biromatics, because it's ridiculous how often they are told to "choose" or something stupid like that. Don't tell them to choose. Respect their choice.
