I came out of the flashback when Amanda came out of the bath. "Sorry." I said.
"I understand why you got upset. When comparing my life to yours it wasn't nearly as bad even if I did suffer I at least had someone to comfort me. You were always alone. I guess I'm not that good of a friend." Amanda said. We were both dressed now with small sad smiles on our faces.
"At least you tried that's more then my parents did for me. If they even remembered I was there at that house." I said choking up at the end.
"Don't even think about it you have lots of people who care about you now. Like Victor or Jerry and that cat thing that follows Vic around."
"Rahn."
"Yes Rahn. That was its name very interesting conversations with the feline." Amanda said.
"I don't think he cares about me like you think." I said.
"Hey quit criticizing my good points. How about my hair?" I grabbed a brush hanging from the wall and sat her down on a stool. With gentle strokes I brushed her hair trying to figure out how to change the color. Please turn black you devil called hair and while your at it make mine turn back to red.
I watched the hair untangle itself as the brush went through but no color change. Fine what color will you turn gray or white or how about the color of shadows? Shadows... That was it! I put down the brush and ran my fingers through her hair weaving my magic into the soft strands. Slowly it changed to black and I felt a grin on my face I had never owned before.
"Take a look." I said as it finally finished coloring her hair. Amanda walked over to the mirror and played with the black strands. Her image flickered and I saw someone else with long black hair looking at me with wicked teeth and slanted eyes. The other person was a female who looked more like a skeleton with skin than human. She wore a black robe tied with a live snake that slithered around her waist. Her finger twirled a piece of hair then came to her lips. "Shh..." and the finger pointed to the shadows beside me.
I took a quick look then turned back but the lady was gone. I looked back at the shadows and found them shifting like last time. The snake was back but I was panicking this time for I knew it was ready to strike me down in defense. "I don't know what you did Emily but my hair seems to shimmer in the light." Amanda said snapping me back to reality.
"What's wrong you have that face?"
"What face?" I said. "Nothing's wrong."
"Something's wrong because you're in a defensive stance." I looked down I was certainly in one but that was not her point. "Did you do something bad with my hair!" Yes that was the point she was trying to make.
"No no nothing is the matter with your hair it's just..." I look at the shadows again. Who was it after?
"Just what?" who could get us out of this situation? The only one I could think of was "Rahn." I said.
"What does the cat have to do with this?" I back away from the shadows taking Amanda with me. "Are you okay? You seem a little paranoid."
"Anytime now would be nice," I said as the shadow grew closer. Amanda pushed down my arm and walked away from me. "No!"
Suddenly the shadows erupted and I could see the faint lines of Rahn's back hunched over something. "What are you looking at?" Amanda asked. Don't tell me I was the only one who could see into the shadows. I needed to get out of the room. Grabbing Amanda's hand I pulled her out of the room and went to the first window I came across. I slide the panel up and sucked in a breath of the fresh air.
"Much better," I sighed.
Amanda didn't say anything but she looked at me worriedly. She was the one who jumped as Rahn appeared behind us. "Don't scare me like that cat!" she exclaimed.
