[ C A R A 'S P O V ]
When I woke up in the morning, I noticed I was sleeping on my sister's lap with her hands in my hair. My sister would do this to me when I couldn't sleep. My mother used to do it for the both of us.
I saw her soundlessly sleeping, she could sleep anywhere anytime. I'm glad that never changed about her. I slowly untangle her hands from my hair and make her lay down. I step a little further and see how much my sister resembled my mother. She couldn't change it no matter how much make up she caked her face or how oddly she dressed.
I decide to venture into the apartment. Dennis had left last night to sleep in his friends because Delivigne had one bed which the both of them shared. I notice all the books cramped up in a shelf and a few sheets of 'A' circled in red on top of the sheets. My sister hadn't dropped out of college like she claimed?
I check her closet and see a few coloured shirts and skirts in between all the dull and dark colours. I see a picture of Mom and Del stuck to her closet. Delivigne hadn't changed, she couldn't. She had just faked a whole load to cover up her past. Delivigne couldn't run from herself no matter how she tried.
I finally decide not to swoop through before clicking a picture of my sister and mom. When Del was younger, she barely looked like mom but she had the same crinkles in the end of her eyes, their smiles so bright, their hair long and beautiful. Mom was holding onto Delivigne tightly while the both of them wore a matching pink dress.
I head to the kitchen and prop myself there and go through the messages and calls. I notice one message from Wendy.
(Message received at 12:55pm)
Wendy: We've all been worried sick about you. Reggie and Nancy called us and let us know that you were staying over at theirs. Your father left here extremely stressed and sad. Please come back, sweetie. Will stayed up till Reggie and Nancy called and convinced the poor boy. I hope you are alright.
I sigh and let my head fall to my hands. Reggie and Nancy were always covering up for me. This wasn't the first time I had suddenly disappeared.
Reg and Nanc have been my friends since mom left. They've seen me at my worst. I decide to scroll through their messages.
(Message received at 10:00pm)
Reggie: We searched for you all over the place and we couldn't find you. Seems like you don't want to be found, Cara. This is all we can do for you, Care bear. We love you and we are sorry. Please come back.
I take a deep breath and continue.
(Message recieved 9:15pm)
Nancy: please text us back. Tell us where you are. Tell us if you are safe. Please tell us. We are really searching for you everywhere. Please tell us.
(Message recieved 9:17pm)
Nancy: please come back. We are sorry.
It wasn't simple. None of it was. I decided to skip classes today and take a break today as well. I had only missed two classes yesterday. I finally decide to shove the phone out of my sight and cook something.
