I groaned and threw the pencil across the room. "I can't do it."
Lisa laughed at me, grabbing the pencil and walking over to me. "Yes you can. You do it all the time. Now I don't see why you're so nervous. I thought you were just friends?"
I glared. "We are. But, there might be something else there. And that makes me nervous."
"Aw, you have a crush on Damien?"
I growled. "No. And I'm not going anymore." I crossed my arms over my chest.
"Oh yes you are. And you're going to look fabulous." I grumbled. "Stop that. Now you look amazing. You need to calm down."
I sighed and just looked at my best friend. "How the hell did you do this?"
She smiled at me. "I had you there, and you were saying the exact same things I'm saying. Now go put on your dress."
It was Friday night, Damien's birthday, and I hadn't seen him all day. Actually, none of the females had seen him all day. Most of the guys had gone out, allowing us girls to get ready. The whole point of the party was for Damien to meet his mate there.
I rolled my eyes.
I had spent most of the day locked in my bedroom, lying on my bed and living in denial. I didn't want to get ready for the party. It was only when Lisa had come in and dragged me off the bed that I finally got up.
Now, a few hours later, my hair was its normal curly mess, I had put on a little more makeup than usual, but still very natural. I knew every girl down there would look amazing, so why was I trying?
I did as Lisa said and put on my dress. It was beautiful. It was purple and strapless. It was tight around my bust, before it flowed out and down to above my knees. I paired it with a tight silver belt around my waist. I grabbed a pair of silver heals to go with it, but I could barely walk in them.
I looked in the mirror at myself and sighed. Cocking my head to the side, I bit my lip.
"You look beautiful Emmy. And even if he isn't your mate, you'll find yours eventually."
I nodded my head slowly. "You head on down. I'll be there in a second."
She pursed her lips but nodded and walked downstairs. I took the opportunity to kick off the heels which were already hurting my feet. No thank you.
I felt stupid, worrying so much about my appearance. I shook my head. Whatever happened, happened.
Walking bare foot, I made my way downstairs. There was no one inside, so I walked about with no one to ask what was wrong with me. As I got to the kitchen, I saw a few people, and they turned to look at me.
I took a deep breath now and walked outside. Everyone was out here, all the people from school. People were dancing and drinking, having a good time. I shifted uncomfortably as people turned to stare at me. I made my way around, seeing the bonfire. I was trying to make it look like I wasn't looking for Damien, but I was.
I finally saw him, with Maddie clinging on to his arm. He hadn't seen me yet, but I turned and headed inside. Of course, she would be his mate. Just perfect.
I walked back into the kitchen where I saw a guy with a bottle of vodka. I smiled at him. "Can I have some of that?"
He smiled back. "Sure babe."
I grabbed the bottle, and started drinking. I took a good four or five gulps and then handed the bottle back. He started at me. "Damn girl. That's hot."
I smiled. "Well, its going to be a long night and I need to be drunk to get through it. Thanks for the vodka."
I turned and headed back inside. I felt no effect. Usually I was a light weight, but no, tonight I could hold my drink. I made my way over to a quieter part of the party. There was a bunch of chairs off to the side. I sat down beside a few people from school. We all started chatting easily. I was trying to take my mind off of Damien, and thankfully no one mentioned him.
I had been sitting there for about an hour when the people I was sitting with went to get drinks, leaving me sitting alone. I stared at the bonfire, trying to push back the weird feeling of sadness. My wolf felt hurt and pissed. I didn't know how long I had been sitting there before the guy with the vodka walked over.
"Hello again."
I smiled. "Hi."
"I'm Mike by the way."
"Emaline."
"Yeah I know. You're the badass chick."
I smiled. "Yeah, I guess you could say that."
"So, since I gave you some of my drink, do I get anything in retur?"
I looked at him, confused. "What do you mean?"
Then so fast I didn't have time to process, he kissed me. His hands were everywhere, and I couldn't move away. When I felt him touch my boob, I had had enough. I moved my hand, grabbing his hand and twisting it. He cried out and finally pulled away.
Before he could say anything, I punched him in the face.
This was such a bad idea.
I left him lying there. I marched inside, hearing people calling my name. I didn't head to my room. Instead, I went out the front door. I could barely hear the party from here and I could breath.
I needed a run, but I was wearing a stupid dress. God dammit.
I felt really stupid then. I had dressed up, put on this stupid dress for Damien. Because for a second I thought he would be my mate. I wanted to punch something.
I didn't even hear the door opening. I was just standing there, panting and trying not to cry, when I felt two hands wrap around my waist.
At first I freaked out in case it was Mike, but then I felt the sparks. The touch was familar and amazing. The sparks radiated through my body, right down to my toes. I leaned back, feeling everything melt away as I stood there.
"I knew it would be you."
His voice was a whisper and a small smile danced on my lips. I turned slowly and looked up into his crystal blue eyes. I saw it all, my whole future in those eyes. I sighed and wrapped my arms around his neck. He leaned his head forward until our foreheads were touching.
Then, at the exact same time, we both whispered 'mate'.
His lips then crashed on to mine. For that moment, I forgot everything. I forgot about rogues and that creepy guy and breathing. It all melted away in that one perfect moment.
Damien's lips were soft, brushing against mine. I would have rolled my eyes if I could. I pushed myself closer to him, deepening the kiss, and I felt him smirk against my lips. Idiot.
We broke apart when we hadn't taken any breaths for a few minutes. We were panting and laughing. I wanted to stay in his arms forever...
God having a mate made me sound corny.
"Well, I don't know about you, but this is as perfect as things could get." He smiled down at me. I was melting again.
"Hey I'm not complaning."
He let me go enough to instead grab my hand. "Come on. Let's go sit down."
I nodded and let him led me throught the house. We went back to the party, pushed through the people and found a seat beside the bonfire. He sat down, and pulled me onto his lap.
His arms wrapped around my waist and I felt people staring at us, mostly smiling.
"How jealous do you think everyone is that you're my mate?" He whispered in my ear, sending shivers down my back.
"Well, considering most of the girls are looking at me like they want to rip my head off, I'd say very jealous."
He laughed. "I was talking about the males actually. You are lucky you are in my lap because otherwise I would be kicking some ass."
I rolled my eyes. "And that's the problem with having an alpha for a mate. Possessive as hell."
"Get used to it babe."
I wrinkled my nose. "Not sure how I feel about 'babe'. Sounds weird."
"Well, you better get used to that too, babe."
