Two months after Damien and I had mated, it was Christmas Eve. I was never a big fan of Christmas, but Damien was. He teamed up with Lisa and our mom's to make my life a living hell. Unlike my parents, I wasn't a religious person, so I saw no point in celebrating Christmas.
But Damien was determined.
"How can you hate Christmas?" He was holding a piping bag, decorating Christmas cookies. If trees covered in green and red icing counted as Christmas cookies.
I sighed, having heard this two millions times already. "I don't hate Christmas. I just don't like it."
"You're weird. Everyone loves Christmas."
I rolled my eyes. "Except for me."
I was sitting at the island, watching as he continued to decorate. It was late in the evening. Everyone was very relaxed, wondering in and out and decorating the tree, with all the children getting very excited. Even they were against me.
I grabbed one of the cookies, earning a glare from Damien, and stuffed it in my mouth. Now the food, that I could get along with. It was the music and cheer that just annoyed me.
"What about presents? You have bought presents for everyone?"
I rolled my eyes again. "Of course I have. I may be a bit of a Grinch, but I have presents."
"Oh yeah? You've got mine then?"
I nodded slowly, narrowing my eyes.
"What'd you get me?"
I gave him a flat look. "I'm not going to just tell you. What kind of surprise would that be?"
He sighed and continued decorating. Once he was finished, we made our way into the living room. It was almost fully decorated, with fairy lights hanging from the walls and all the other Christmasy decorations. A huge tree was sat in the corner, covered in ornaments and tinsle. It was so tall, they could barely fit the star on top. It was just touching the roof.
This was a bit overboard.
I jumped and faceplanted the sofa, snuggling into the pillows. I was just getting over a cold, so I was wrapped up in so many layers. I was wearing sweats and one of Damien's hoodies, with thick socks. Even as Damien tried to move my feet to sit down himself, I didn't move.
"You're lack of Christmas cheer is getting old. Why can't you just join in the fun?"
That's when Lisa walked in. "Trust me, I have been fighting her for years. She's too stubborn."
I rolled my eyes. They were talking like I wasn't there. I tried desperately to sleep. I ignored them as they talked about happy Christmas stuff. That's when the children ran in. God help me.
They jumped on top of me, making me groan. I had barely seen them all week because I was sick. This was my punishment for a weeks peace.
"Emmy get up. Let's play."
I winced. "Shouldn't you all be heading to bed? It's late, and if you don't go to sleep soon, Santa won't come."
They all protested. "You say that every year. We're not tired."
I sat up. "Too bad guys. It's time to go."
They all gave me puppy dog looks. "Can we have a story first?"
I never could resist those eyes. I groaned. "Fine. One story and then bed."
They all jumped up happily, forming a circle around me. I sighed, but before I could start, one of them jumped up.
