Hermione woke up, her bed feeling more comfortable than it had done just the night before. A hand raked through her hair and surprised by the contact, she opened her eyes, looking into the grey orbs of Sirius.
"You fell asleep last night. I didn't want to wake you, you looked so peaceful."
Hermione felt at peace, laying her head on Sirius' chest with his arms wrapped around her waist, keeping her from moving. She smiled up at him and the two stared into each other's eyes, neither daring to break the contact. A blush rose up her neck, covering her face as she thought of how close their bodies were and Sirius smirked down at her. His eyes flickered to her lips, back to her eyes as he bit his bottom lip before leaning in. Moving his arms from around her, Hermione pulled away the curtain from around the bed, thankful that the other 3 boys were asleep before pulling open the door, glancing back to see Sirius' disappointed face as she slammed the door behind her.
----------------------------------------------
Walking down the castle corridors, Hermione's thoughts ran wild. Sirius couldn't like her like that could he? She could completely mess up the time line. Leaning her back against the wall and sliding down, she pulled her legs underneath her chin and rested her head in her palms. She couldn't dispute the fact that she enjoyed lying next to him but she couldn't mess things up this much. She could have already messed up the time line just by knowing everyone.
Standing up, Hermione ran to Dumbledore's office, deciding to distract herself and do something useful.
-------------------------------------------
"Hello Miss Granger." Dumbledore greeted, without even looking up from his parchment that he was writing on.
"Professor. Voldemort created horcruxes. Is there any chance that we could start searching for them? I need a distraction." Hermione begged.
"I see no reason why not. What are the objects he used?" He said, placing down his quill, talking in a casual tone as though talking about the weather.
"Tom Riddle's Diary, Salazar Slytherin's locket, Gaunt's ring, Hufflepuff's cup, Ravenclaw's lost diadem. I know where the diadem is but nothing else."
"And where is the diadem?"
"The place where everything is hidden. Other objects may be in the school at this moment but I have no way of knowing."
"Thank you, Miss Granger. Please enjoy your day, and don't worry about the time line. Mr Black is a very kind hearted, young man."
Walking out of his office, Hermione stared dumbfounded at the floor opposite. How could he have known?
---------------------------------------------------
Seeking some peace after a day full of lessons, Hermione walked down to the quidditch before sitting down in the stands and taking out her books and parchment to complete her potions essay that Slughorn had set. She had also been invited into the Slug Club and Hermione was at a loss at who to take with her. Her thoughts drifted to taking Sirius before she mentally slapped herself.
Finishing her potions essay, Hermione packed away her books before heading back to the common room. It was past curfew but for once in the time that she had been at Hogwarts, she didn't care. A rustling came from behind her and Hermione had the feeling that she was being watched. Something didn't feel right and Hermione craved to be back in the common room.
Snapping Hermione from her daze and clouded thoughts, Fawkes came flying down to her, landing on her shoulder before stretching out a leg which contained a neatly folded note. Taking the parchment from its claws, Fawkes flew off leaving Hermione alone once again. The cramped, cursive writing that was slightly slanted was a letter from none other than Dumbledore.
Dear Miss Granger,
I understand that it is after curfew but I figured that this was the perfect time not to be caught. Disguise yourself in any way possible and come down to my office as quick as you can. Come alone, it is imperative that you are not seen. Make sure nobody sees you.
Your Humble Headmaster,
Albus Dumbledore
Quickly folding the letter into the pocket of her robes, Hermione ran to the common room, ignoring the glares she was receiving. She ran up to her dorm, dropped her bag on her bed before running back down the stairs.
"Hermione! I need to speak to you!" called the very person she was trying to avoid.
"Later Sirius! I've got somewhere to be!" Hermione called back.
She heard a sigh from behind her before she opened the portrait to the common room, running to Dumbledore's office.
Knocking on the door, a quick "Come in" was heard from inside. Dumbledore's face looked aged in just the few hours that Hermione had last seen him. He was wearing sky blue robes and his long white beard was neatly tucked into his belt. His right hand was grasping his wand in a tight fashion, as though scared to lose it.
"Lead me to the room of requirement Hermione" Dumbledore ordered her.
"Why sir?" She questioned.
"You said that a valuable possession of Voldemort's lives there." Hermione nodded. "I have come to believe that we may find not just one but two horcruxes there tonight but I cannot hope to destroy and find them on my own and I must ask too much of you Miss Granger. Please escort me to the Room of Requirement if you are agreeable with my terms. You must do exactly as I say. If I tell you to run, you run. If I tell you to stay put, you do not move. If I tell you to leave me and save yourself, you must do so."
"Sir- "Hermione protested, utterly dumbfounded.
"It is imperative you agree otherwise I cannot hope to rid the world of Tom Riddle." Hermione slowly nodded her head, ashamed that she could think of no loop hole to change his mind.
Pacing thrice in front of a wall, Hermione willed for the place where everything is hidden to present itself to her. A large wooden door appeared before her as Dumbledore walked forward, grasped the handle and pushed the door open. The room was exactly how Hermione remembered it. The large, white stone pillars holding the room up shone out from the rest of the darkened room. Large piles of objects filled the room, seeming to go on forever.
"I think it would be best if we split up. Look for a large square box with the ravenclaw diadem inside and a small rectangular box containing the Hufflepuff cup." Before Hermione could answer his instructions, Dumbledore had walked down one of the strips of clear space.
Walking down another, Hermione began searching through a crate of purple velveted boxes before giving up and starting on the pile of rubbish that littered the table next to it. Moving a large rope out of the way, her eyes settled on a velvet box. Opening the box, she gasped as the jewels of the diadem shone before her. Reaching out a hand, Hermione grabbed onto the diadem before pulling it out of the box. A sharp, stinging sensation shot up her right arm as she dropped the diadem with a clatter on the floor.
"Hermione!" Dumbledore shouted before rushing down the corridor of clear space, a small box in his hand, where the young girl lay writhing in pain on the floor.
Pulling away the sleeve of her robes, Hermione noticed the newly formed black patterns on her right arm before her vision blurred, Dumbledore's voice echoed in her ears and she blacked out flat on the floor.
