[ K A B I R ' S P O V ]
Dropping my bag on the floor, I walked steadily into the house to not wake anyone up in the late night. Taking hushed steps to upstairs, I focused on the door of my room and was about to twist the knob when I let my gaze wander to Nisha's room. I had been too rude to her from past two months, putting the frustration of my breakup on her.
It wasn't good.
I should at least see her.
Leaving the knob of my door, I went to her room and opened the door to find her sleeping on the bed. Sighing audibly, I was about to close the door when I heard, "Kabir, I'm going to kill you." Before I could register, a pillow was thrown at my face, and before I could say further, another was thrown to kill any protests. "You stupid!" She screamed. "You went to New York without telling me! You didn't come for our birthday! I hate you! I hate you so much!"
"Sis-"
"Don't sis me!" She yelled. Damn, she was one angry girl. "Because of you, my best friend didn't want to see me. Because of you, she stays quiet now."
"What do you mean?" I asked, scared of what I had done.
Nisha huffed, sat back on her bed and crossed her legs. "She doesn't laugh anymore. What have you done to her?" She asked helplessly. "Who gives false promises of marriage and then leave?" She sprinted across the room and tied her arms around me. "Tell me you're here for her. She needs you after what happened with Meena Aunty."
"What?"
What had happened here when I was away?
"Do you know that bitch knew everything?" Nisha hissed. "Alina is so hurt. Good thing, she died. Alina remembered everything. Dhruv told me. He said she screamed a lot at her parents for hiring her. She tried to cut herself."
"What?!" I screamed.
I should've stayed here rather than becoming a coward and running away. I should've fought beside her. I should've protected her.
For Heaven's sake, she remembered everything and I had no idea what those memories held. Did Dhruv know whenever Alina saw a flashback she needed chocolate and book to calm down? Did he know Alina didn't move from bed for an hour after that?
"And she's so much angry at you." Nisha broke the hug. "As a sister, I'm supposed to tell you to chase your love, but as a best friend, you deserve this." She picked the pillow from the floor and started hitting me, forgetting I was her brother and I had just come from a fifteen-hour flight with fatigue attached to each inch of my bone.
I needed sleep and then go to Bangalore after two days. Would anyone let me live?
"Nisha, relax." I took the pillow from her hands. "Please tell me what happened."
"I don't know much. Ask Dhruv. He was with her the whole time."
"Dhruv?" What the hell were they doing together? "Did she move on?"
Nisha twisted her lips. "There is a man, Pranit, from her support group. He's four years older than her. She told me he keeps on trying, and maybe-"
"Maybe?" I whispered, the ache started rising in my heart.
What if she had moved on and didn't need me anymore? What if she hated seeing me? What if I had lost my bookworm? What if I had lost my love because of being scared of the future?
"Maybe, Kabir. But she still loves you. Why did you both break up?"
"Complicated," I answered.
She smirked. "She said the same. Come on, you must be tired." She took me by the hand and made me sit on her bed whilst I thought about her maybe again and again. Alina couldn't forget me. I was her first love, the only man she ever loved in her entire life. She had told me I was the only one who got her attention.
