"Where were you?" Nisha's shriek made me turn my head to the side. Kabir raised his eyebrow in question as the voice flowed out of the speaker. Smiling nervously at him, I stood up from the couch room and trudged to the terrace. "I had been trying to call you from last night."
The scenes of last night brought a warmth to my face, but neglecting them for a while, I answered her, "Busy with my fiancé."
"Why I sense a double meaning in this?" I curled my fingers on the railing. "Oh my god. Did you both?"
"No," I interrupted her quickly. "Just other things which I would love to talk with you, however, Kabir will get angry."
"He won't. Don't tell him! I'm not missing my best friend's sex life. At least someone is getting action."
"Nisha!"
"Hey!" She said defensively. "This MBBS will make sure I die a virgin and without any love which I'm not ready for. Huh, Kabir is coming back, isn't it?"
"And it's a bad news because?"
"Because Kabir is a very overprotective brother. He will see upon my actions. My freedom is going," She said dramatically. "If only he accepts dad offer."
That caught my attention. Standing straight, I asked, "What offer?"
"To study at Yale University. Dadu and dad did their MBA from abroad like a legacy because it provides a better exposure. Dad never had you know expectation that Kabir will even do B.Com." But he did. "But Kabir refused."
"Yale?" I rolled the word out of my tongue. Why didn't he talk about that with me? If he was going back and we were doing this long distance thing, then he should do it properly. "Can you tell me something about it?"
"Admissions are open in three rounds." She paused. "Can you convince him? It will be much better than doing it from Delhi University. I'm tired of everyone calling him a failure."
"It is in?"
"America. Dad even wanted him to do his graduation from abroad, but Kabir refused because-" She stopped herself but I got the sentence. He stopped because of me, because I didn't want to go abroad. I wasn't that strong mentally to just simply jump into a country.
Oh.
America.
Delhi was a different thing but imagining he would too far away from me was troublesome.
Turning my head, I saw his figure with books in his hands, completing his assignments. He deserved it. He deserved to get the best from the world. I couldn't hold him with me, too scared of what would happen to us. He had already done it once.
We were stronger.
I could manage two years without him.
"I will."
"Thank you. Please, check the requirement. As much I know my brother, he wouldn't even have tried looking for it."
"Sure."
"Now, spill the beans what happened last night. You sound different."
Laughing, I spew my guts to her, spill what happened last night between I and Kabir, keeping the details as much discreet as much possible.
Cutting the call, I passed to our room, opened my laptop and settled on the bed.
Yale University, huh.
